When good bands go bad ... or did they?

Hot hot Heat photo by Ryan SchierlingSo, today marked the release of Hot Hot Heat's new album Happiness Ltd., their second on a major label since leaving Sub Pop. Now, I find it amusing that, well, in glancing at the various media sites and chatting with folks and such, no one seems to care. The new disc has garnered both mostly mediocre reviews, and more telling, not that many of them.

My question to the TIG audience is ... when do we stop caring? HHH used to be the "next big thing" from the Pacific Northwest, yet now they seem to be already "has beens" -- all of this in the course of, really, three album: Make Up the Breakdown, Elevator, and Happiness Ltd..

Have HHH gotten a bad deal? Are modern rock listeners fickle and overtrendy? Or maybe, HHH just wasn't that good to begin with? The questions abound.

Yea, I have to admit I really liked the Hot Hot Heat show I saw from the "Make Up the Breakdown" tour and then, well, never really got that excited about 'em again. I'm not sure if that makes me flaky... I think the songs from that record had the best hooks!

It does seem like many, many pop bands only have one great record in 'em... and that HHH should likely be added to that list?

I think there's a lot of trendiness going on with listening habits, but, like Dana said, a lot of these bands only have one really cool album in them.

The indie rock mentality is only exaggerating this. I get the feeling that we're living through an era where novelty is really the hip factor and a lot of crap that's totally hyped today will be more or less forgotten. It's sort of like all those new wave and alternative bands that got really big because they were, in essence, weird, only to totally fall off the radar shortly after that.

A: When they started making subpar music.
At least for me this has nothing to do with "trendiness" or whatever, it's really the fact that HHH had really good stuff when they first started out [pre-Make Up the Break Down], then they came out with Make Up the Breakdown which was catchy and can't-listen-without-singing-along status. But...then they came out with new stuff and it was just not the same. Like Dana said, lots of bands only have one good album in them, and I'm pretty sure this was the case for Hot Hot Heat.

Plus they changed guitarists, which probably had somewhat of an effect on their sound not being as good as before.

I had a brief fling with a few of HHH's hits, but overall I think they just didn't leave an impact. A really good band should make you feel like you're listening to something totally new, but HHH just, made good music.

In my opinion anyway :]

Are Hot Hot Heat and The Rock and Roll Soldiers different bands?
