Defining swot-pop
Submitted by imaginary liz on May 16, 2007.Move over britpop, screamo, cuddlecore, and the like there's a new sub-genre under the umbrella of indie-pop in town: swot-pop!
As discussed in an article on The First Post, the movement is lead by performers like The Horrors (so cool that they quit the BRMC tour to hit the road on their own) and We Are The Physics (who sound more swot-punk than swot-pop). TFP explains, that swot-pop occurs when "New indie performers self-consciously style themselves as studious geeks."
Does that mean that BloodHag is swot-pop? Would Harry and the Potters be considered studious geeks?
I wonder why they didn't go with the name of geek-core or library-pop? I love coming up with names for sub-genres... what other indie-music movements have you all seen bubbling up and what have you named for them?

Mustache Rock RULES. Are there any other members to your genre, or is it just We Wrote the Book on Connectors exclusively??

Can someone please explain to me what math rock is/was all about? I seem to remember a handful of bands lumped into this genre a while back but what defines math rock? I envision a band sitting around a physics lab carefully crafting songs based on the Pythagoran Theorem, but somehow I don't think that's accurate.

It's not exlusive but as far as I know WE is the only mustache rock band out there right now. However, my 10 year old nephew is currently starting up a mustache rock band of his own. I haven't heard them yet but i bet they suck.

"Oh, come off it, Neil, you little swotty-pants. Just look at you, swotting away for teacher like a total spazmo. You're just an utter creep, really, aren't you? You've done loads and loads of work on it and I haven't done anything, nothing at all. Go on, test me. Go on, test me!"

I've got a pretty serious mustache, but i'm pretty much flying solo these days, ticklin' the ol' ivories. Maybe I can start a sub-mustache genre; singer/songwriter-'stache? piano-stache? confessional-stache?
and math rock is a brilliant genre, it doesn't really reflect image or physical style per se; it's typically a group of musicians well-versed in theory who take pleasure in writing frighteningly intricate melodies/rhythms in non-standard time signatures. A portion of it stems from glorious prog-gods like Yes and King Crimson, but there are a multitude of other avantgarde/pop influences as well. Some math bands that pop into my mind are Slint and Don Cabellero I believe, but I could be wrong, I never got into the genre. A few people would definitely say there's some mathy influence in Minus the Bear, but that's debatable.

Sorry to bust your bubble, Mike. But, the term "mustache rock" is already spoken for. Here are some references:

That's not to say you shouldn't fight for the rights to the name, because personally I'd love to see WE in an outright cage match with the dudes from Grand Funk Railroad. I think you can take 'em!

I love how one friend introduced Math Rock to me... it makes me laugh everytime I think about it (although, I don't think Math Rock as a sub-genre is anything to laugh at).
I asked him what it was and he simply said, "it's calculated."

I like it! Short and simple. In case you need more to go on, Tim, here's the extensive wikipedia entry for Math Rock:
