Shortlist Award for Achievement in the Field of Excellence
Submitted by Erik Gonzalez on May 3, 2007.Although I don't fully understand the "Shortlist" awards, they have announced their, ahem, shortlist for the 2006 award. The Shortlist award is "a peer-selected award that recognizes the most creative and adventurous albums of the year" (um okay) and made their 10 album nomination list. The winner will be announced "in May". I get the impression it is an attempt to be an American version of the "Mercury Prize" in the UK but maybe I'm just not a big fan of extraneous awards anyway.
The nominees are Band of Horses, Beirut, Bonnie "Prince" Billy, Cat Power, Girl Talk, Hot Chip, Joanna Newsom, Regina Spektor, Spank Rock, & Tom Waits.
Indeed, a motley crew.

D$,
Is this the same thing I sent you the other day? I think so, but if not, we should dig that up too.

Does Tom Waits seem out of place anyone?
And by out of place, I mean the-obvious-best-of-all-these-but-of-course-has-not-a-prayer-of-winning.
That Tom Waits record is amazing. If it goes to Joanna, I'll be okay. If it goes to Beirut, I'll vomit.

Funny, I feel exactly the opposite regarding Beirut and Joanna. How can you not like Beirut???
Erik Gonzalez said on May 3, 2007:
Yeah, I was just listening to the Beirut album on my lovely flight from Atlanta to Sacramento and thinking how much I like the disc ... Huh.

Completely random, but I just saw the Simpsons for the first time in -- oh, I don't know, years -- last night, and it was the episode from whence you pulled your title. Bizarre!
Also, Joanna Newsom makes me want to swallow nails.
