Tonight's Recommended Show: Trapped in the Closet-The Play

Trapped in the ClosetOne of my favorite theatrical events in life was seeing Hedwig at the Re-bar starring Nick Garrison (the fellow who played/channeled Hedwig in the Seattle stage version) a while back.

It's no surprise that Nick and his friends at Brown Derby Productions would realize that it was imperative to bring the 12-part R. Kelly Trapped in the Closet series to the Re-Bar stage. Rumor has it that they performed this hip-hop-era last year... and, by the grace of good luck are bringing it back.

I can't wait to see the cast (who also includes Seattle notables Sarah Rudinoff, Nick Garrison, Rebecca Davis, Ian Bell and others) nail lines like:

"close my mouth,and swollow spit,
as I'm thinking to myself this is some deep shit"

and

"Then I said you must be crazy or on crack to have somebody off up in my muthafuckin house"

I can only hope that they've integrated some of R. Kelly's DVD commentary into the stage production.

Unfortunately, it is only showing 3 nights and TONIGHT is the OPENING NIGHT! If you can't make it tonight... it is also showing on Wednesday (April 24th) and Thursday (April 25th) at the Re-Bar.

Did anyone see the Vh1/Human Giant crew (Paul Scheer, Aziz Ansari, Rob Huebel, Doug Benson) at Bumbershoot give their commentary after playing each episode? Most brilliant thing I've ever seen.

Wow -- I had no idea they did that! It does sound super-brilliant.

Did anyone see when R. Kelly did a live performance of the series on... I think it was an MTV Awards show? It was a musical theater in the round... and he was the only person on stage -- singing all the parts and changing characters on the fly. I kinda had to look away. But what I did see was... quite memorable.

That is AWESOME! Just think if he starts to weave news reports in his hip-hopera! Or if he gets into a feud with Rosie and lashes out at her in song! And if he has special guests and sings:

That's Eddie Murphy in the closet!
He made a baby with Melanie B
He swears it's not him
I don't care as long as it's not me!

This is going to be brilliant. Sarah Rudinoff is a comic genius, and when she and Nick Garrison get together in a Brown Derby production -- well, watch out.

I love R Kelly so much and his songs. I watched several concerts of him too. I love the song "ignition" even if collaborated with Eminem, but this movie made me not watch him even my friends told me that he's a fine actor in this movie and the movie itself is good.
