The Divorce have called it quits!
Rather than a melodramatic email to their mailing list or blogging on their MySpace, the Divorce announced this end of an era with a wee little note on the Crocodile calendar on the listing of their June 30th show. Subtle, but so sad. There's an all-ages and 21+ show.
Has anyone heard rumblings of Divorce side-projects or post-break-up plans?
Believe it or not, I've found comfort in a line from Bright Eyes' Cassadaga album (heard it yet?), "The Scales always find a way to level out." Speaking of.. how about that #4 Conor!

Good. They sucked anyway. Yawn.

Ah, bah humbug.
6 Joseph Riippi said on April 18, 2007
"The Man Moan" is so rocking.
Are they fully joining The Catch now?
7 IndieSucks said on April 18, 2007
To clarify: Both the divorce and bright eyes suck.
8 Imaginary-Anonymous said on April 18, 2007
I totally just read that as joining THE CLASH and got very confused for a moment.
9 imaginary dana said on April 18, 2007
Oh IndieSucks -- don't make me come over there and hug you again!!!
10 imaginary dana said on April 18, 2007
That is intriguing indeed! Eric? Jimmy? Anyone else? Let the rumors/confirmations/denials start flying...

I just want to understand how people like these bands and why? The music is boring and repetetive. The lyrics are not memorable. There is very little melody. I think there must be some reason why this style of music seems to be popular in the Seattle area. Perhaps it's a virus that has rotted out a lot of people's brains?
I think indie is popular for the same reason that Paris Hilton is popular. She, like indie, displays absolutely no talent. Somehow, people got the idea that music that displays no talent is cool, because it's not trying to be, or something. Somehow, trying to make good music and knowing how to play your instrument have become uncool, which really sucks.
12 Erik Gonzalez said on April 18, 2007
ditto on the humbug. Just out of curiosity IndieSucks, who would you list as the good bands these days?
13 imaginary dana said on April 18, 2007
Hear hear! I wish to second that vote of curiosity. IndieSucks, spill it!
14 Imaginary-Monkey Paw said on April 18, 2007
I agree, The Divorce were a waste of a practice space here in Seattle. We won't be talking about them in six months, but I'm also pretty sure that IndieSucks is one of those fellas who hasn't updated his music collection since high school. It's easy to dislike what you don't understand.
15 imaginary dana said on April 18, 2007

The happy romantic in me would like to think the Divorce is breaking up in part because of the upcoming marriages for Shane and Jimmy. Not that I want them breaking up... but I'd like to think something good is coming out of it. OK, maybe I just like the word play of it all. Divorce. Marriage. Get it? Um, yeah. Anyhoo...
I've been online reading about promises of new musical projects from the Divorced fellas all day. All will be well, and I can't wait to see what's next.
And Breanne and Emily, you are two lucky ladies!!

A friend of mine fostered a long-term hatred of Tool based on their song Sober. She hated them for years until recently discovering that she had misunderstood their lyrics. Instead of "why can't we not be sober?" she had thought they said "why can't we knock things over?" After realizing her mistake, she listened again and realized they were still worth hating.
I can't believe you knock The Divorce but profess to enjoy The Lashes. Gross!
19 imaginary dana said on April 18, 2007
Fair enough. Though I'm pretty sure you can't simultaneously proclaim your hatred of hipster indie bands and your love of the Lashes.
It just ain't right.
20 imaginary dana said on April 18, 2007
Hahah! Great minds think alike, Imaginary-Krause!
21 Imaginary-Krause said on April 18, 2007
Admittedly, I am biased against The Lashes. Their keyboardist cut me off at the bar during a show at El Corazon (or perhaps it was still the Graceland?). I will never forgive them. Petty I know, but seriously, don't cut in line. It's just bad manners.
22 IndieSucks said on April 18, 2007
The lashes songs are catchier and more memorable, especially their melodies. Also, the players have more skill and especially the vocalist's voice is about a million times better. Sorry but I judge based on the quality of the music not the manners of the members.
While we're on the subject of vocal quality, how can people like that modest mouse guy's voice? His voice is constantly cracking.
23 Imaginary-Krause said on April 18, 2007
I'm glad to see that you appreciate a band with pop-sensibilities - such as The Lashes. I fail to see how we ended on the topic of vocal quality. I think the original question posted by igDana is how it can be that you have an intense dislike for indie bands, yet profess to love The Lashes?
Chewbacca was a wookie, yet he lived on Endor. It just doesn't make sense.
24 ALLALOMusic said on April 18, 2007
Well that is a bummer.
We will really miss them but luckily they left some brilliant music behind for the world to share. We enjoyed the interviews, the CDs, the compilations and everything else they were involved with, and wish all the former members the best. <3
25 IndieSucks said on April 18, 2007
I don't hate all indie. I like some indie. Lashes are more pop rock, which I also love. I used to love what was called "indie". Bands like Pavement and The Pixies had talent and melody and rocked from time to time. "Nu-Indie" like Modest Mouse and The Divorce and Bright Eyes is just simply weak music. It doesn't rock, it's boring, the vocals suck, etc...
26 imaginary dana said on April 18, 2007
Maybe you should change your handle to SomeIndieSucks then?
Modest Mouse is "Nu-Indie"? I didn't get that memo.
27 Imaginary-Danniel said on April 18, 2007
It's The End of an era : (
Shane told me that Garrett and Jimmy are doing some goods, and Kyle and Shane are working on some sweet "New Order-ish" electronic music. Should be fun.
Its a big bummer, yeah, but I'm sure that we'll be graced with a re-gathering every once in a while. Or at least I hope.
Here's to 7 years of wonderful,
Danniel
p.s. IndieSucks.... you suck, and so does your attitude. You elitist prick.
28 Imaginary-Krause said on April 18, 2007
I love The Pixies. I do question your opinion of Modest Mouse as far as it relates to musical ability and and their ability to induce boredom, or lack thereof. Bright Eyes makes me want to stab my eyes out with a pencil.
29 IndieSucks said on April 18, 2007
I hate what indie has become. I especially hate what it has done to the Seattle music scene. Nirvana wouldn't have a chance in the current scene.
30 imaginary dana said on April 18, 2007
Yes, TIG will always have fine memories of the Divorce. Remember when Shane and Jimmy did that electro-cover of "Last Christmas" at our 2003 Imaginary Holiday Office party? That ruled.
An electro-Shane project makes perfect sense to me. Bring it!
31 Erik Gonzalez said on April 18, 2007
You put together an interesting list. I agree that most "indier-than-thou" people look down on bands like Tool, Mastodon, Thursday (well, the first album) Faith No More and System of a Down - all bands which I have a secret love - and thats too bad. I don't understand why they're shunned, but maybe they can't stand the volume. I've never really understood Panic at the Disco, QOTSA or Coheed & Cambria, but thats just me.
You're right though, Nirvana wouldn't be welcomed these days, but then again, would Death Cab have made it if they arrived in 1990? They'd be laughed off the stage. The scene changes, and it will change back - right now people are still having "alternative rock" hangover.
I can also understand the dislike of crackling voices, not because I dislike it (as seen in my love of all things Oldham) but I know many people who just cringe at that style of singing.
I think from here on in, I will attempt to never use the term "indie". It's always bugged me and maybe its time to finish it off.
32 imaginary dana said on April 18, 2007
If we kill the term "indie" then TIG will need a new tagline.
Perhaps instead of "sparkly indie-pop press" we could say "Three Imaginary Girls: cure for your alt-rock hangover"?
33 ALLALOMusic said on April 18, 2007
I think we all have stories like that about a lot of Seattle bands, they can be rude and mean - but that should not be a reason to dislike the music.
Although I think that the Divorce can do backflips over The Lashes any day, both were fun and put on great live shows, but I would probably never miss the Lashes, and I will always mourn the loss of the Divorce.
34 ALLALOMusic said on April 18, 2007
well, they still (kinda) have Damien, and I believe the Catch are still (sorta) around....so, in pieces but not completely broken?
35 Imaginary-David said on April 18, 2007
They will be missed, for sure. Fantastic live band.
36 Imaginary-Danniel said on April 18, 2007
Don't forget DOLOURS COMEBACKKKKKKK!!!!!!
37 imaginary dana said on April 19, 2007
Good point! One great local band goes away and another one comes back. It's all kindsa ying and yang.
38 imaginary dana said on April 19, 2007
We emailed the Divorce via MySpace yesterday to wish them the best and ask what was coming next. Here's the reply we got from frontman Shane Berry:
There's some really exciting stuff in there, especially about Michael Lee and Jimmy.
Keep us all posted, Divorcees!
39 ALLALOMusic said on April 19, 2007
Well, it is great to know Dolour is finally releasing their new double-album, but in terms of MiM, they are no longer signed to them, so MiM is still down two (two and a half?) great bands.

well we must all remember, everyone is entitled to their opinion. just remember thats all it is. "indiesucks" has an opinion... and thats all it is, a personal opinion, it isn't fact or fiction, just what that person happens to think. tons of people disagree.. it doesn't make them right either. i think its sad when people let their opinions on art become who they are. why come rain on peoples parades... cool, you don't like the divorce, or modest mouse, or a slew of other bands that hundreds if not thousands of people love... thats fine, just don't go around spouting off your opinion as though its a FACT.
i can't stand modest mouse vocals.. doesn't mean they can't be a good band, just means i don't like em. i still love you though indiesucks... so much love in my heart for all those who need it.
