Recommended show + free tickets: TMTS and BOAT at the Comet! {4/30}

Come one, come all! Throw Me The Statue and BOAT are playing at the Comet this Saturday, and you're not going to want to miss it -- it's like two great bands that taste great together. This is BOAT's first show back in town since they returned from their East Coast domination tour (hitting all points Brooklyn, NY, Milford, CT and Rock Island, IL) and very special guest (and original member) Z. Duffy will be joining them (Z. moved to Chicago a long time ago) for this one show. Z. was integral in BOAT's sloppy pop early days, and we know Saturday will be a reunited-and-it-feels-so-good lovefest.

And PS, longtime love of the imaginaries Throw Me The Statue will headline the night -- and we've been having dreams that they might debut a new song. Not sure if this is true, but we hope so!

With Boy Eats Drum Machine and Wonderful on the lineup, there's only one thing missing: and that's you! Which is why we have a hot pair of tickets to give away to one lucky reader (and their +1). Just send a note to tig {at} threeimaginarygirls {dot} com with the subject line, "YouReallyShouldBeSmiling" sometime before 3p on Friday, April 29th. We'll pick a winner at random and get your name on the guest list for Saturday night's show. Easy breezy!

imaginary liz's favorite albums of 2009

For some reason as stressful as it is sometimes to do, I found myself compiling a bunch of year end and decade end lists over the holiday weekend. So many so, I decided to spread out all my lists throughout the week. Today we'll start with the meat of the list -- my favorite releases of 2009.

As long as I've been making lists, it's always been apparent that I'm partial to Pacific Northwest bands... and this year it's especially so. I'm sure I've forgotten something that I love beyond belief.. but here is the list as of *right now*. What are your favorite local and non-local releases of 2009?

Recommended show: The Brunettes w/Throw Me the Statue & Nurses tonight at The Vera Project

Okay, guys. Here’s the thing: I am writing this recommendation based solely on my love for The Brunettes. We’ve mentioned Throw Me the Statue here on TIG a few times before and I’m sure they’re a mighty fine band, and uh, Nurses sound great too, but my point is – GO. SEE. THE. BRUNETTES. They’re an adorable band from New Zealand and they are chock-full of great lyrics and fun, poppy goodness.

Seriously. Exhibit A:

TIG favorites and indie rock band Throw Me the Statue just released a new video to their single "Hi-Fi Goon", from their recently-released album Creaturesque. The timing of its release, I'm sure, is meant to whet the appetites of people who can't wait for their show on Tuesday at the Vera Project with The Brunettes.
Throw Me The Statue has had a steep learning curve. Releasing their first LP, Moonbeams, on Scott Reitherman’s local Seattle label, Baskerville Hill Records, they recently signed with the Indiana based independent label, Secretly Canadian, for their sophomore full length release, Creaturesque. Weaving together pop, rock, and a slew of influences, Creaturesque is redolent of an estranged lover’s pheromones lingering on a hand-me-down T-shirt.

In an interview with The Line Of Best Fit, Scott Rietherman commented on recently joining the impressive collection of bands on Secretly Canadian. He sees Jens Lekman’s pop presence on the label encouraging as a niche for Throw Me The Statue to fit into Secretly Canadian’s roster. Opening track, “Waving at the Shore,” hearkens to Lekman’s love of horns and handclaps, setting a light-hearted tone at the outset of the album. However, this incredibly upbeat pop song feels like an outlier to the rest of the album, only hinting at the overwhelming mnemonic mood of Creaturesque, during the more introspective verses.

Initially the subtle schizophrenia between songs felt like the product of a band whose sound is undefined and overly referential especially when listening to the blatantly Built to Spill-inspired “Hi-fi Goon,” followed by “Baby You’re Bored” which strays into Neutral Milk Hotel territory. However, the construction of this album and the songs that comprise it reveals its skilled craft on “Noises,” the bumpy backbone of the 12 tracks. It’s pared down instrumentation and a vocal melody that follows the electric guitar rhythm and the plunks of the sometimes sweet, sometimes electro keyboard, defines the general structure of TMS’s song writing.

The song serves as an index to the idiosyncrasies of Creaturesque whose tunes range from a Mountain Goats lo-fi moog feeling on “Snowshoes” to the heavily produced horns and distorted guitars on “Dizzy From the Fall” that, following each other, manage to combine to create a consistently solid album that is never redundant. The overarching theme can be summarized by the lyric, “to make the trip back home, to think to smell dads clothes, go through his rock and roll. Oh world, it’s you who turns us old,” on “Ancestors.” This manages to sum up the feeling of nostalgia that creates the wistful yearning you’ll have for these songs.

The album is subtle yet catchy, at once hopeful and bittersweet, it’s tightly wound pop songs expanding to fill your head. Start charging Throw Me The Statue rent for the mental space they’ll comprise between your ear-buds as the days get shorter and the leaves start to turn.

Chomp down at Light in the Attic's 3rd annual doughnut eating contest

Here is a little free association test for you: When you hear the expression "competitive eating," what comes to mind?

If the answer wasn't a Mexican Elvis impersonator, well, you're probably not the only one, but it feels kind of appropriate, no?

Indie record label Light in the Attic is hosting their 3rd annual donut eating contest on Saturday, August 1st at 1p at Top Pot Doughnuts (5th Avenue location). This event is free to the public. There are a few fun and exciting changes this year for participants and cheerleaders alike, including the participation of four other record labels (Barsuk, Sub Pop, Suicide Squeeze, and Hardly Art).

The name of the game is doughnut eating, and apparently this will be a tag team-type affair. Volunteers from the audience will be selected at random and teamed up with one of the five label representatives to scoff down as many rings of fried deliciousness as possible.

You know what’s funny? When I first heard Throw Me The Statue’s new album Creaturesque, I was immediately struck by the tracks that hearken back to the feeling of mornings spent listening to Built to Spill and drinking too much coffee. Knowing that Phil Ek helped produced it reveals where that sensory memory sprang from. I guess that’s not really funny. But more on that later— Creaturesque will be out August 4th on Secretly Canadian.

In the meanwhile this Seattle band will be hitting the road as co-headliners with New Zealand band The Brunettes in support of the new album. Before they go, they will be playing a handful of Seattle shows. A full list of tour dates and the track listing of the new album is listed below. With all these opportunities and a good cause to support (A Drink for the Kids at Vera), you really have no reason not to see an upcoming lo-fi power-pop Seattle band play at home before they blast off this Sound.

Best of 2009 {so far}

I don't know how it happened, but half the year officially is over! That means that we're half way to end of the year list time! I know that for a bunch of us, there are few things we love more than lists and mix tapes (I usually make a mix for friends of my year-end list favorites) -- so it makes sense we should do a mid-year check in and see what's topping our Best of 2009 list. Here's my off-the-cuff list of what albums would vying for Top 10 of 2009 in my book:

TMTS

Friday night's show at the Crocodile was massive! We're so thankful that Sarah Joann Murphy was on hand to capture the whole night with stellar photos. The above Throw Me The Statue photo is a personal fav from the night. You can read about Telekinesis's performance (and see more SJM photos) thanks to Cory's review.

TIG staffers are a lot like you -- coming up with our list of faves for the year is a fun and gripping process. After comparing/contrasting/debating our individual favorites, we figured the sum of our imaginary parts would make for an interesting list.

While ChrisB and Keenan, among other things, brought in the power-pop elements, Chris Estey stood by the smartie subtle elements of this year's Northwest offerings. Imaginary liz, as usual, loved the lo-fi and indie-pop songs, while imaginary dana spent much of the year obessed with Throw the the Statue and of course, the Fleet Foxes. And nearly all of us agreed that the Saturday Knights album was a force to be reckoned with. Here's our our staff votes tallied up...

imaginary dana's top Northwest picks for 2008

I'm a chronic procrastinator, so here it is, January 5th, and I'm finally ready to make sense of the musical chaos and wonderment that was 2008 and compile a list of favorites.

Don't even try to make me rank these releases in order, or I'll never, ever finish my list. Let's just say these were some of the very best local bands in my iTunes list this year, presented alphabetically.

When I asked the very intelligent and capable talent buyer Eli Anderson of the soon-to-be-reopened Crocodile Cafe, I was expecting a list of ten records he liked. Instead, he had sent me several well-written lists and deserves countless bonus points because he even showed his work.

Bumbershoot is a musical extravaganza, spanning the three-day Labor Day weekend with more bands, arts, and elephant ears than anyone can possibly capture. We had a posse of imaginary writers (ChrisB, Chris Estey, imaginary elle, imaginary dana, and Cory), and photographers (Chona, Kyle, Nathan, and Andrew) all over Seattle Center, trying to capture the frenzy and mayhem of Bumbershoot 2008. Below you can see and read about our adventures during the first day, which kicked off with local electronic duo Beehive and ended with superstar Beck, and covered over 20 other bands in-between.

Enjoy!

Beehive, Wells Fargo Stage

Beehive must be one of the most hard-luck bands in Seattle. The local electronic duo had gotten a difficult timeslot - Saturday at noon but tried to make the most of it. They played an energetic rock set that lasted about 35 minutes, simulating a rock band with electronic instruments. To get the crowd on their side early started off with two covers known by everyone in the fairly large crowd - "We Will Rock You" and "Helter Skelter." Overcoming a scratchy microphone, they got a lot of the crowd to stand and even a few danced. They found their groove early and singer/programmer Alethea, or "Butterfly Beats," delighted the crowd with her soulful voice. (ChrisB)

<img title="Beehive. Photo by Andrew Waits" src="/files/bumbershoot_beehive.jpg" border="1" alt="Beehive.

Beehive photos by Andrew Waits.

New Faces, EMP Sky Church

I've seen this band a bajillion times -- I practically stalk them -- and this was a very good show. They had a great dynamic with a pretty big turnout. They owned that huge stage. (Chona Kasinger)

New Faces. Photos by Chona Kasinger.

Throw Me the Statue, Rockstar Stage

An important aspect to booking festivals is kicking things off with a band to set the right mood. Throw Me The Statue was just such a band, with their undemanding pop tinged with elements such as a backing horn section. Their crowd was comfortable enough to stand or sit, a few head bobbers sprinkled here and there. (imaginary elle)

<img title="Throw Me the Statue. Photo by Chona Kasinger" src="/files/bumbershoot_TMTS.jpg" border="1" alt="Throw Me the Statue.
Throw Me the Statue. Photo by Kyle Johnson.

Neko Case, Samsung Mobile Mainstage

It makes sense to put former Washingtonian Neko Case on the mainstage at Bumbershoot because it was the first time I've seen her in a venue big enough to contain her voice. She played for about 75 minutes and was funny and likeable throughout, making note of playing depressing country songs in the middle of the day. "Deep Red Bells" and "That Teenage Feeling," played back to back sounded enormous and expansive - especially with three different guitar parts (Jon Rahouse on petal steel, Paul Rigby on electric guitar and Case herself playing acoustic guitar). She and longtime collaborator Kelly Hogan joked midway through the set that it was too early in the day for them to get wasted. Their humor was hilarious and provided a necessary balance for the emotional content of her set. {see the setlist} (ChrisB)

<img title="Neko Case. Photo by Nathan Feder." src="/files/Bumbershoot_Neko_Case_NF.jpg" border="1" alt="Neko Case. Photo by Kyle Johnson.

Das Vibenbass, Wells Fargo Stage

The aptly titled quartet Das Vibenbass bring the jazz vibe and bass to the 21st Century music listener, bringing the genre to a more accessible level. Hell, as their set progressed, I started to realize I wished we were listening to the local band--an upright bass, saxophone, drums, and vibraphone--in an exclusive, smokey hidden jazz club with a gin, rather than out in the sunshine on fold able chairs. Wait a minute… are they playing a jazz rendition of "Black Hole Sun" not in a cheesy Kenny G covers Top 40 sort of way, but a very slick, enjoyable way? Never mind, they do know how to bring jazz to the modern ear. Their entire set was brilliant, definitely fetching all the praise they have received, such as being nominated in the Seattle Weekly for Best Jazz act. Doesn't hurt that their saxophone player was a good looking, well-dressed fellow as well. (imaginary elle)

The Girls, EMP Sky Church

In the dark crowded Sky Church at the Bumbershoot Festival yesterday afternoon there was briefly the flavor of a late 70s small club show, with the one "wavo" band in town that "got it." The transgressive energy of sleazy humor ("Fixing The Chairs"), light-hearted Futurism, clipped robot rhythms, weird stop-starts ("TV Glow"), and shuffle beats from Shannon Brown (vocals), Elie Goral (drums), Derek Mason (keyboards), Vas Kumar (guitar), and (bassist) Griff happily entranced the hometown Seattle mob. The crowd wasn't frenzied but it was very cheerful. Just like the shared similar aesthetic Figurines and Futureheads, The Girls is even better live than their recordings, wishing they would add more of that spontaneity and rawness next time out to their songwriting. It would be great if this city had its next Screamers, and this band maybe could be a contender for that role. (Chris Estey)

Nada Surf, KEXP Lounge

The KEXP Lounge is such an amazing refuge from the hurried, elephant-eared pace of Bumbershoot. There a few hundred lucky fans can see bands in a intimate dark (air-conditioned) setting. Catching Nada Surf acoustic style was definitely a highlight of my Bumbershoot experience; Matthew and Ira's spot-on harmonies positively sent chills down my spine. Also of note: the bassist for Osma did an admirable job filling in for an injured Daniel Lorca. Watch a video of the band performing "Weightless." (imaginary dana)

Estelle, Fisher Green Stage

Estelle, the British R&B/soul star, delivered what will be one of my favorite sets of the weekend. Playing before a huge crowd on the Fisher Green stage, she more than lived up to the buzz surrounding her new <em>Shine</em> album. On stage she reminded me of a cross between Sharon Jones and Lily Allen - two of my absolute favorite performers. Her band was tight and funky - although I wish they would have been funkier; their obvious influences are Parliament/Funkadelic, The Famous Flames and The Dap Kings and only on a few songs ("Pretty Please" and "American Boy") did they seem to break out. "American Boy", the #1 UK single that also features a cameo from Kanye West, closed the set and the enormous crowd sang along and danced - it was one of those great moments where a huge and diverse crowd shares a fantastic performance of a song that is the soundtrack to a whole lot of summers. (ChrisB)

!!!, KEXP Lounge

I really enjoy !!!, the Sacramento-based, punk/funk/jam band but writing about them gives me fits with MS Word's grammar check; using Google isn't any easier. Still, their 30+ minute set in KEXP's music lounge was great fun. Playing mostly newer songs (singer Nic Offer even said that they would give us "a hit and a half"), they still delivered the same dance punk they are known for. Offer might have forgotten a few times that this performance was being broadcast on the radio because he dropped the f-word a few times. The funniest time was when he said that he thought the room was full because we were all "the fucks who are going to see Beck tonight" (!!! and Beck is the most unfortunate scheduling conflict of the weekend) and threatened to give a crappy performance for the last song. They didn't; in spite of their threats, they still rocked. (ChrisB)

M Ward, Rockstar Stage

Beck, Samsung Mobile Mainstage

Did you think Beck was watching a legend in action, as Imaginary Kiku did? Or did you think he was, in a word, bullshit, as ChrisB did? Our imaginary coverage has a little something for everyone.

Beck. Photo by Kyle Johnson.

Enjoy!

Best of 2008: it's half-yearly check-in time

As of today, we're officially in the second half of 2008. Welcome! To gear you up for another fabulous six months of local Northwest releases, we here at imaginary headquarters have brainstormed an imaginary mix for all of you, containing some of our favorite songs by Northwest artists released this year to date thus far.

No promises that each of these will make our Best of 2008 Reader's Poll final list, but at least this way you have the next six months to follow-up and listen to these releases before you have to decide. To paraphrase imaginary ChrisB, we feel like this list is pretty unfuckwithable. But that doesn't mean that we didn't inadvertently overlook something great. If you have additions for our list, please chime in with your comments below.

Last night Three Imaginary Girls celebrated two momentous occasions -- our sixth birthday, and the re-release of one of our favorite albums of all times, Liz Phair's seminal debut Exile in Guyville -- with the best tribute to the fine record we could think of: nine of our favorite Northwest bands, covering the record from start to finish. We're still reeling from the sheer giddiness of the night. Chop Suey was packed with over 300 amazing people, reveling in the joy of finally getting to hear the album performed live by such amazing musicians.

The bands were stellar. Srsly. I had extremely high expectatation for the night, and they were all exceeded.

Thanks so much to all the amazing bands who played; thanks a zillion to Easy Street Records, KEXP, Seattle Sound Magazine for co-sponsoring the night and especially to David Schmader of the Stranger for co-emceeing it; and most of all, thanks to all of YOU, our readers for an insanely wonderful six years of Three Imaginary Girls.

Without further ado, here's the setlist as well as some fabu-photos from the night. We expect loads more pictures coming in the next few days; in fact, if you have some yourself, please post them to our TIG Sparkly Indie Pop Flickr group.

June 3, 2008, Seattle, WA: It's true that we stole your lighter. And it's also true that we lost the map. That's why Three Imaginary Girls will proudly present the songs of Liz Phair's triumphant debut record "Exile in Guyville" as interpreted by some of the best up-and- coming bands in the Northwest. The event is called "Exile in {Imaginary} Girlville" and is co- sponsored by Easy Street Records, Seattle Sound Magazine, and 90.3 KEXP.

Exile in {Imaginary} Girlville takes place on Wednesday night June 25, 2008 at Chop Suey and features Throw Me the Statue, Team Gina, Star Anna, Tennis Pro, Lucy Bland, M. Bison, Tea Cozies, as well as special performances by Rachel Flotard of Visqueen and Lesli Wood of Ms. Led. The bands will perform the songs on the record in order, from "6'1"" to "Strange Loop" and everything in-between.

The event marks the 15th anniversary of the release of "Exile in Guyville" and ATO Records' re-release of the album with additional demo tracks, as well as finally releasing a vinyl version of the record. Which is certainly cause for celebration.

Speaking of celebration, the night also commemorates the sixth anniversary of Three Imaginary Girls.

"'Exile in Guyville' was such a pivotal record for me that it seems fitting to revel the start of Three Imaginary Girls to that soundtrack as performed by our favorite local bands," said Dana Bos, co-founder of Three Imaginary Girls.

Three Imaginary Girls anticipates another year of incredible live music and record reviews, as well as some new exciting changes. The website has some new looks and colors coming very soon as well as other big fun updates planned for the coming year.

But for now, the excitement is focused on June 25.

"Sure, Liz Phair just announced that she'll be performing 'Exile in Guyville' on the same name, in New York" said Liz Riley, co-founder of Three Imaginary Girls. "But I'd rather hear Rachel Flotard sing "Fuck and Run" than Liz Phair herself.

Do you wonder just how wild that would be? Join Three Imaginary Girls on June 25 to find out.
