Tonight in Seattle:

Northern Portrait

Imaginary Crafternoon: Old 97s, The Young Evils, Holiday Indie-pop, and crafts!

Old 97s Young Evils Crafternoon

Join us Sunday, December 5th from 1pm-3pm at Neptune Coffee as we gather to craft holiday style. In this month's edition of the Imaginary Crafternoon Listening Party, we're going to work on our craft projects and listen three new releases in their entirety from beginning to end:

The Old 97's - The Grand Theatre Volume One - The eighth studio album that somehow captures the vigor and daring of their live show (finally).

The Young Evils - Enchanted Chapel - One of our favorite releases of the year, from Seattle or otherwise. It's full of "strumming, crisp drumming on a kick, tambourine, and a bright blue briefcase full of melodic punk-blues defines the schema."

The Matinée Holiday Soirée - a 5-song ep featuring festive songs by Northern Portrait, Strawberry Whiplash, Bubblefum Whiplash, Chamgagne Riot, and Math and Physics Club that will be a holiday staple for years to come.

While listening to these three stellar releases, we're going to have some paper craft projects going. We'll have some card stock, craft paper, and scissors for folks to cut out snowflakes or create holiday cards. Feel free to bring any paper, craft punches, or crafty items to share and/or join in the fun.

You don't have to partake in the craft paper piles, bring your own knitting needles, or current craft project and join us for fabulous crafty conversations and good times! As always, it's a free all-ages event and we'd love to have you join us!

JUST ANNOUNCED: We're going to have some hot crafty raffle action at this Sunday's event. Participants will be entered in a raffle to win a fabulous partying gift {a pair of tickets to see the Old 97s at the Showbox on January 24, 2011 or a Matinee Recordings / Math and Physics Club indie-pop treasure}.

San Francisco Popfest: Day 3 {Saturday Evening}

All photos by Steve Louie

at Rickshaw Stop

And on with our San Francisco Popfest coverage coming to a close, here's our post about the Saturday evening show at the Rickshaw Stop featuring the Smittens, The Magic Bullets, My Teenage Stride, Northern Portrait, and our very own Seattle darlings, Tullycraft. Tonight was the night. The crowning glory of indie pop. I'd been calling this night the best show of the year long before it even happened.

We're so excited for this weekend's San Fran Popfest we had to podcast

The San Francisco Popfest starts today (imaginary Keenan is already headed south to get there in time for tonight's shows)!!!

The 'fest runs though Sunday, May 24, 2009 and Keenan, amazing imaginary photographer Steve Louie and I will be running around the greater San Francisco area basking in all that fine fine indie-pop.

We're looking forward to most all the bands (ballboy ballboy ballboy), but we put together a podcast of some of the lesser known ones and ones with hit songs we've been listening to on repeat (ahem: Stay Flyin').

You should go listen to it now (and go subscribe to our podcasts on iTunes 'cause we have big plans to make this the summer of podcasts!).

San Francisco Popfest announce partial line-up

I don't know about you guys, but Sasquatch has never really been my cup of tea. I'm sort of a whiner about huge festivals. But, book a bunch of indie pop bands that I love over a series of smaller venues? I'm there in a quicker than you can shake a tambourine. This Memorial Day Weekend, I'll be headed South instead of East to San Francisco Popfest! I'd basically decided I was going before there was a lineup, because, well, I love popfests. To my surprise the (partial) lineup is even better than I was hoping for!

Northern Portrait, your beautiful songs make me ache

About 45% of the cds we receive weekly claim to share influences with them: pop music in general, the Housemartins, Echo and the Bunnymen, Jarvis Cocker and the Smiths/Morrissey in particular. But, Northern Portrait delivers 10-fold yet retain an authenticity that will make your head spin with glee.
