The folks heading up the Athens Popfest just released the first round of band announcements for this year's fest set to run October 11-15, 2011 in my favorite town east of the Mississippi.
Featured headliners include Olivia Tremor Control, Bob Mould, Throwing Muses, The Dead Milkmen, and Man Or Astroman? (with 65 more bands still to be announced!) and they will surely turn heads, but usually it's the lesser known bands that end up making big splashes in Athens. Need I remind you that we heard both Black Kids and Pains of Being Pure at Heart for the first time when they played opening daytime slots at the 2007 fest?
One of those lesser known bands on this year's PopFest schedule is Eureka California, an Athens, GA hometown band who has piqued my attention with their garage-rock-brit-pop songs. My particular favorite song today is "Baby, I'm Your Garbage Man," recorded live at Slaglefest earlier this year.

Latest comment by: Eureka California: "PS we're playing at Bluebird in Seattle 9/9!"
Latest comment by: Justin: "Actually Duncan, they did Jumping Fences, Opera House, A Sunshine Fix, Gypsum Oilfield Fire, California Demise, and an aborted version of NYC-25. 6 Olivia Tremor Control songs in total, and all of them wonderful."

Athens Popfest is like summer camp for indie pop and rock nerds.
Latest comment by: imaginary liz: "Thank you soooooo much for the Nana Grizol video! It must have been great to see them all lo key in a parking lot in the glorious Georgia summer night air. Did anyone get Blondiegrunt YouTube-age? I'm going to go poke around and see if I can find some. "
All weekend I lived vicariously through our friends in Athens at the Popfest (I'm still waiting for those Nana Grizol YouTube postings!). Jon Manning was down there and posted some fine photos of the Music Tapes performance to the TIG Sparkly Indie-Pop Photos group.
Latest comment by: rough: "this is one hell of a celebration"
Latest comment by: imaginary liz: "Nope I missed Ryan A. But his cd is good! Friday did rule the most."
You'd think I'd take this opportunity to point you to a bunch of Cars Can Be Blue songs, right? Nah, let's talk about Fishboy.
Latest comment by: Chris Weber: "YAY! Fishboy!! I get very excited when my Seattle life gets intertwined with my former Denton, TX background!!! I have been a fan of Eric "Fishboy" Michener (and his brother Dirk "Cavedweller" Michener) for years and years, and his live show will not ...
Today I'm especially looking forward to High Water Marks from Lexington, Kentucky. They have a fetching Mangum-esque slightly muttled pop with Rentals keyboards style.
Latest comment by: jordan: "we're already here! we got into town late last night, and man, athens is sooooo beautiful and sooooo much fun...round one at the grit starts in t-minus 20 minutes! i want michael stipe to make my vegan sandwich! "
Next Thursday night's line up at the Athen's Popfest is going to cause mass hugging hysteria. Darlings like Ted Leo, Darron Hanlon, Patience Please, and nine other cutable bands will be gracing the PopFest stage over the course of the day and night.
Latest comment by: ChrisB: "I heard about Violet Vector and the Lovely Lovelies from Idolator and I think I might love them. Can I talk you in to picking up one of their CDs for me while you're there? I can give you some money before you leave for Athens (even if I'm not exactly sure how)."
