I feel like I somehow inadvertently saved the best for last. Viva was my very last interview of the weekend, and they were completely nice, completely funny, poised and full of all the information I wanted to hear. They really made me feel good about interviewing, since as I mentioned before, this was pretty much my crash course weekend in it.

What you don't see in the video is Kevin picking me up at the end. I had completely flubbed up a special highfive he tried to give, and when we went to redo it, he surprised me by picking me up, squeezing me with a bear hug, and planting a huge kiss on my cheek. Talk about a band you want to hang out with later.

p.s. Kevin and Anita: I need to try these things you call "boiled peanuts."

Bumbershoot 2007: Fleet Foxes Interview

Uhm, talk about an appropriately named band, that Robin Pecknold is a fox. But I better not say that since my boyfriend is sitting nearby [and also videotaped this interview...]

I think my banter with Fleet Foxes is some of my favorite out of the weekend. They were really having a conversation with me, rather than tense "interview talk" that people fall into when they know they're being recorded. I also thoroughly enjoyed their set later on in the afternoon at the EMP Sky Church.

Oh my, these two must be at least 20 years my senior, but I think I shared the most laughs with them. If it looks like I'm five inches from their faces, it's because I pretty much was. I'm really sad I missed their set now, but Sunday was my day of running from interview to interview. Perhaps I'll make it out to their next show at the Comet.

I was totally starstruck during the interview with Jesy from Tiny Vipers, as you might be able to tell from the interview. I'm a big fan, what can I say!

She was completely cool though, we talked for a bit after the interview. We also discovered we only live about a mile from each other. During the show, I happened to stand next to her dad, who was completely glowing with pride the whole time. I'm pretty sure there were other people singing along in the HUGE audience besides me. I have a short review up in the KEXP blog, so I don't want to repeat myself over here, but the EMP Sky Church was definitely the perfect spot for her to play.

p.s. Jesy--I know I said "just kidding" about the back-up singing, but I was really serious!

Bumbershoot 2007: Menomena Interview

We picked out this perfect spot in a hallway of the theater for the Menomena imaginary interview, everything was set...and then they started letting the audience in for a comedy show or something. Thus, pardon the random people talking in the background.

I feel like this is some sort of "A Moment with... Menomena" TV show or something, the way we're sitting. Talk about three very silly, very nice boys. They get a bit dirty at the end of the video... I asked off camera if they would sing the Muppets song, but I was turned down, which I expected.

David Terry was just incredibly nice, even after my boyfriend wasn't exactly...erm, tactful. [Don't ask, it's not even good to repeat.] David said he was worried about our interview, I was flattered! If you notice at the end, he says, "Three Imaginary Girls rule!!"

I met up with three members of the band Sneaky Thieves -- Darby, Freddy, and Bryant -- outside of the festival. This was actually shot at church yard right next to Easy Street Records. My boyfriend and "cameraman" had offered Freddy some rum, which he turned down because he said he had to babysit his niece later. What a responsible rocker!

Originally the Saturna interview was shot in the load-out dock, but John Legend was just too loud, so luckily the guys were down for finding a far away spot. We had to restart a few times, haha. Backstage while I was waiting for them, frontman Steve's dad was plugging the band to me. As if I wasn't about to interview them! But, gotta love supportive parents.

They said this was only their fifth Seattle show, and they're from the NW!

Yes, I've had nearly 10 bands thank me after their interviews for not asking them what harebrained idea resulted in their moniker.

It was the last day of Bumbershoot and the end of the night. As my fellow PhotoG and I waited with anticipation for Ted Leo to start, I saw his new bassist drinking out of a bottle of wine. Of course I had to comment to him, "Wow… very classy." He replied, "I didn’t want to waste the plastic." This triggered a "save the environment" discussion, during which he revealed his wish to Save the Whales! It’s good to see such contribution to our eco system from rock stars. I told him he’d make a great spokesman for the environment.

Ted Leo & the Pharmacists were entertaining both backstage and onstage. So much energy surrounded this four-man band. Even though Wu Tang Clan was performing at the same time, Ted and co. were able to gather up quite a few followers with much needed enthusiasm after such a long day.

Before the show, I didn’t know much about Ted Leo except for his cover of “Since You’ve Been Gone," which Chona (the other PhotoG) and I requested... but apparently, the bassist hates it, as he turned around and said to take a picture of him saying "No0o0o0!" to our request. So it was a pretty safe assumption that he hated it.

The night ended with Ted Leo doing a one-man encore and a stage crew member going up with the guitar player to jump and... I guess you'd call it dance along. I’ll say it was movement with excitement. It was definitely an awesome show... and hey: maybe we saved some whales by watching them!

Even though Wu Tang Clan was performing at the same time, Ted and co. were able to gather up quite a few followers with much needed enthusiasm after such a long day.
