OK, twenty-four hour party people.
We have a pair of tickets to giveaway to one of the shows I am most looking forward to this fall: Psychedelic Furs and Happy Mondays playing together at the Moore. Tickets go on sale on Saturday morning, but if you're our lucky winner, you and a friend can go for free. The show is on September 14.
Tony Wilson, co-founder of Factory Records and the man who signed Joy Division and the Happy Mondays died today. Many of you probably best remember his story from the excellent movie 24 Hour Party People, but his influence on British modern rock can't be understated. He was receiving treatment for cancer, but died of an unrelated heart attack - he was 57. NME has an obituary for the music legend here and the BBC has tributes here. I think I'll go pop on Unknown Pleasures now.
Latest comment by: Erik Gonzalez: "I meant to post this with the news, but got sidetracked: Joy Division performs "New Dawn Fades" live. "
Now, if only someone could explain to me why so many people think Shaun Ryder was/is such a profoundly good lyricist?
Latest comment by: imaginary liz: "I loved 24 Hour Party People -- it is in my rotating list top five favorite movies of all time. How do you think it compared to Live Forever in its ability to touch newbies to drink the BritPop Kool-Aid?"
Bad news: Bez can't get out of the UK for the Coachilla show this weekend. Good news: Trapped in the Closet is the funniest play of all time.
In the wake of a rash of the releases by some young'uns out there that have honed in on the drugged trip britpop state that the Happy Mondays trademarked, the prospect of a battle between the influential and the influenced is quite delightful.
Latest comment by: Twisting My Mellon, Man: "Oh yeah.... I'm ready for some new Happy Mondays, but..."Ryder in particular is the picture of health, a family man who’s substituted a mountain bike for the bong"?? Should be interesting!!!!!! "
