KEXP's annual BBQ on Saturday

viva voce

Ideally summertime is all about getting sweaty and silly at free outdoor music shows. And guess who sticks to their ideals? Our provider of independent, new music, KEXP. Their summer concert series at the Mural Amphitheater in Seattle Center is running over the next few weeks to bring you a plethora of pitch-perfect bands for free. This Saturday, the 8th happens to be their annual BBQ from 2-9 pm and you know it’s going to rock your socks off.

Best of 2007: Erik G's favorite songs

OK, well, nobody likes to reflect and rank more than I do (I'm a scientist, I love to quantify), so here goes. I've got my favorite songs of 2007 - no, not best or most innovative, but rather the songs I liked ... lots and lots and lots. There is a little overlap from my forthcoming Best Albums, but also some curveballs. Enjoy!

Honorable Mention:

  • "Girls and Boys in Love" by the Rumble Strips
  • "Sons of Cain" by Ted Leo & the Pharmacists
  • "Jack the Ripper" by the Horrors (special note: If the Horrors had a brain and released the original fast demo version of this song on their debut Strange House, it would have been an easy top 10.)
  • "Ragoo" by Kings of Leon
  • "Heart It Races" by Architecture in Helsinki
  • "Geld Essen" by K.I.Z.

#10. "The Prayer" by Bloc Party from Weekend in the City - This song is one of the most interesting songs Bloc Party has recorded. Too bad the rest of the album (short of "Hunting for Witches") just wasn't as cool.

Latest comment by: bloodfist: "Wow, that LCD Soundsystem song is really great. Really, really great. I could tell from the first 20 or 30 seconds that I was going to love it. There's almost a certain air of 'confidence' about it, if that makes any sense."

Latest comment by: Mike: "I have been calling Mascis "The White Wizard" for a while now in a loving manner. But I question if it is the punk or hippie in him that made him keep it natural. I caught Dino Jr at the showbox recently and I thought they rocked the place thoroughly. I liked the ...

Tonight's Recommended Show: Dinosaur Jr. at the Showbox

How often does an old legend return to the fold and sound as fresh as ever? Not often enough we say (insert name of your Great Band/Bad Album favorite here).

Latest comment by: Ben Swingline: "MY GOD! That show was so very very good. My ears are still ringing a bit, and I'm very hung over, but it was well worth it. Being an old codger, every other song brought back fond memories of the glory days (read: college). Jay and the boys sound just as ...

But why did they send me a preview CD that will not play on anything CD playing object I own, not my iBook, not my car, not my DVD player? Come on, if you want a review, make the damn thing playable

New releases for the week, from Easy Street Records

My mother always said "if you don't have anything nice to say, then don't
say anything at all!" So... I will refrain from anything more than Tori and
Feist have new records.

That said, I am super stoked about the new Black Rebel Motorcycle Club as
well as Dinosaur Jr..

Latest comment by: Tim Hanken: "He's come off that statement and said something along the lines of he couldn't live with out music, so I'm pretty sure they'll be more shows, no worries."

As Seen On TV: Amy Sedaris, Modest Mouse, BRMC, Arctic Monkeys and more!

For as many listings we've got this week, there's nothing I'm super excited about. Amy Sedaris is always a hoot (she and Letterman have quite the banter). Kaiser Chiefs are all over the place, and Alice Cooper chatting up Carson Daly (or vice versa) could be interesting.

Best. Headline. Ever.

The best headline I've possibly ever seen, brought to us by the amazing writers over at Tiny Mix Tapes: "Is that Santorum in your mouth or are you just happy that bands like Dinosaur Jr., The Rapture, and Man Man are playing Urban Outfitters in-store concerts?"
