It is with a heavy heart that we recommend the *last* Team Gina show ever, this Sunday at the Comet.

We've loved everything about these ladies since we first saw them back in 2007 when they opened for Leslie and the Lys. We've featured their songs in podcasts, counted them as a favorite in past end of year best of lists, and have always adored their electrifying beats and fashion sense. I'd say our favorite Team Gina moment was celebrating our sixth anniversary with them at the Exile in {imaginary} Girlville show.

This Sunday is the last time we will all be able to sing along to their live version of "Boobies" and therefore, it's a must to get thee to the Comet to cheer on Gina Bling and Gina Genius.

Also taking the stage at the Comet that night: Punk Bunny and Black Barbie. It doesn't get any better than that for what's sure to be a killer goodbye party.

Jesus Christ, there is a lot going on tonight. A lot. Glass Candy at Nectar, The Roots at the Paramount, Britney is in Tacoma. Yet, my recommendation is for Team Gina and The Redwood Plan at Chop Suey tonight.

TIG staffers are a lot like you -- coming up with our list of faves for the year is a fun and gripping process. After comparing/contrasting/debating our individual favorites, we figured the sum of our imaginary parts would make for an interesting list.

While ChrisB and Keenan, among other things, brought in the power-pop elements, Chris Estey stood by the smartie subtle elements of this year's Northwest offerings. Imaginary liz, as usual, loved the lo-fi and indie-pop songs, while imaginary dana spent much of the year obessed with Throw the the Statue and of course, the Fleet Foxes. And nearly all of us agreed that the Saturday Knights album was a force to be reckoned with. Here's our our staff votes tallied up...

I'm a chronic procrastinator, so here it is, January 5th, and I'm finally ready to make sense of the musical chaos and wonderment that was 2008 and compile a list of favorites.

Don't even try to make me rank these releases in order, or I'll never, ever finish my list. Let's just say these were some of the very best local bands in my iTunes list this year, presented alphabetically.

Team Gina's newest release Products of the Eighties sports a unicorn on the front of the cd. Unicorns are possibly the coolest fantasy animal ever, and while I don't prescribe to a hot pink and neon green color palette and I'm not in the habit of wearing fishnets under leg warmers, this retro-dance jam duo makes the eighties almost seem cool (again).

After meeting and bonding over identical first names, in spelling and pronunciation, Team Gina was born. Their mantra seems to be ridiculously danceable feminist hip hop delivered by means of raw vocals over sparse Casio beats. Picture two headbanded, heel-wearing sexies sucking on gigantic lollipops and hitting on your kid sister outside of the sneaker store: this is Team Gina.

Reminiscent of Gravy Train!!! or Peaches, with a hint of Jewish white boy rapper MC Paul Barman, Team Gina lay it down with glitzy panache, but not without worthy purpose. The Ginas meld slumber party worthy shout-alongs with liberal political leanings in a very self-aware, and for lack of a better word, FUN way. They're educating us about AIDS while slathering the track with synthy Milli Vanilli beats. They righteously hail the wonders of breasts, theirs in particular, touting "if my tits were a hotel they'd be four stars". Maybe I've been listening to too much Team Gina, but "Boobies" is a breast cancer awareness advertisement waiting to happen.

Pop culture, especially eighties pop culture, seems to be a favorite topic of the Ginas. Dropping references to everything from the Garbage Pail Kids to Saved By The Bell to the Oregon Trail computer game, Team Gina professes their love for a much loathed, or much loved depending on how you look at it, decade of excess. It's not all games for this smokin' lesbian outfit though. They have a liberal message to spread, though they don't bang you over the head with it. They simply lay down some phat beats and cheerleader chant their funktronica way into your heart. Their mission is fun, and their message is tolerance and knowledge --> which is power!

As of today, we're officially in the second half of 2008. Welcome! To gear you up for another fabulous six months of local Northwest releases, we here at imaginary headquarters have brainstormed an imaginary mix for all of you, containing some of our favorite songs by Northwest artists released this year to date thus far.

No promises that each of these will make our Best of 2008 Reader's Poll final list, but at least this way you have the next six months to follow-up and listen to these releases before you have to decide. To paraphrase imaginary ChrisB, we feel like this list is pretty unfuckwithable. But that doesn't mean that we didn't inadvertently overlook something great. If you have additions for our list, please chime in with your comments below.

Last night Three Imaginary Girls celebrated two momentous occasions -- our sixth birthday, and the re-release of one of our favorite albums of all times, Liz Phair's seminal debut Exile in Guyville -- with the best tribute to the fine record we could think of: nine of our favorite Northwest bands, covering the record from start to finish. We're still reeling from the sheer giddiness of the night. Chop Suey was packed with over 300 amazing people, reveling in the joy of finally getting to hear the album performed live by such amazing musicians.

The bands were stellar. Srsly. I had extremely high expectatation for the night, and they were all exceeded.

Thanks so much to all the amazing bands who played; thanks a zillion to Easy Street Records, KEXP, Seattle Sound Magazine for co-sponsoring the night and especially to David Schmader of the Stranger for co-emceeing it; and most of all, thanks to all of YOU, our readers for an insanely wonderful six years of Three Imaginary Girls.

THREE IMAGINARY GIRLS TO HOST "EXILE IN {IMAGINARY} GIRLVILLE," AN EXILE IN GUYVILLE TRIBUTE NIGHT

June 3, 2008, Seattle, WA: It's true that we stole your lighter. And it's also true that we lost the map. That's why Three Imaginary Girls will proudly present the songs of Liz Phair's triumphant debut record "Exile in Guyville" as interpreted by some of the best up-and- coming bands in the Northwest. The event is called "Exile in {Imaginary} Girlville" and is co- sponsored by Easy Street Records, Seattle Sound Magazine, and 90.3 KEXP.

Exile in {Imaginary} Girlville takes place on Wednesday night June 25, 2008 at Chop Suey and features Throw Me the Statue, Team Gina, Star Anna, Tennis Pro, Lucy Bland, M. Bison, Tea Cozies, as well as special performances by Rachel Flotard of Visqueen and Lesli Wood of Ms. Led. The bands will perform the songs on the record in order, from "6'1"" to "Strange Loop" and everything in-between.

The event marks the 15th anniversary of the release of "Exile in Guyville" and ATO Records' re-release of the album with additional demo tracks, as well as finally releasing a vinyl version of the record. Which is certainly cause for celebration.

Speaking of celebration, the night also commemorates the sixth anniversary of Three Imaginary Girls.

"'Exile in Guyville' was such a pivotal record for me that it seems fitting to revel the start of Three Imaginary Girls to that soundtrack as performed by our favorite local bands," said Dana Bos, co-founder of Three Imaginary Girls.

Three Imaginary Girls anticipates another year of incredible live music and record reviews, as well as some new exciting changes. The website has some new looks and colors coming very soon as well as other big fun updates planned for the coming year.

But for now, the excitement is focused on June 25.

"Sure, Liz Phair just announced that she'll be performing 'Exile in Guyville' on the same name, in New York" said Liz Riley, co-founder of Three Imaginary Girls. "But I'd rather hear Rachel Flotard sing "Fuck and Run" than Liz Phair herself.
