This Saturday (November 5th), shining stars of the indie-twee dreamscape will gather at the Vera Project. Opening the night is generifus, an Olympia, WA outfit who's new album, I Don't Have To Worry, features Spencer Sult (who handles all primary duties) with Eli Moore, Karl Blau, members of LAKE and others helping out. As the names of the players suggests, the songs are arid, carefree with moments of both easy-listening joy and innocent melancholy. Best of all, you can easily become obsessed with them thanks to the generifus bandcamp page. Make sure to hear "Good Graces," which channels the whispy, aired meandering of Galaxy 500 that I love so.

Anchoring the show in the middle is Seattle's own crown jewel of Charmin-soft dreamy-pop, Seapony. Seapony songs are sweet and subtle while filling the air with nostalgic fuzz and reverb... and rumor has it Saturday night's set will feature new songs! If you still include the Softies in your nighttime prayers, you'll love Seapony.

Speaking of the beloved Softies, guess who's topping off the night!!! (+ even more exclamations implied).

Tonight, Wednesday 11/17, my friends over at The Beta Society are putting on a show that could potentionally rival the ever-popular Salon of Shame called E-mails from My Parents.

Rather than read your own embarassing journals, why not share the most embarassing e-mails, voice mails, or even videos from your parents? I mean, they've embarassed you enough, right? Why not turn the tables?

Head over to Central Cinema from 7-8:30pm tonight and experience dramatic re-enactments of parental tomfoolery, live readings of e-mail, and actual videos from the 'rents. I can't think of a better thing to do on a rainy, cold night - can you? Tix are $7 at the door, and the usual CC food & drink menu will be available.

Imaginary Interview: The Special Places... playing the Holiday Spectacular 2009

Day 2 of the countdown to the big huge wonderful Imaginary Winter Holiday Spectacular at Chop Suey on December 23rd {an evening full of big huge wonderful fun including, but not limited to Christmas Belles, free mega-raffle ticket goodness, MC David Schmader!}.

The band that is going to kick off the evening is the Special Places, a Seattle duo who recently started to take Seattle by storm with opening slots at BOAT's album release show and Aussie Darren Hanlon's recent visit. You might know them as 2/5 of imaginary favs Tullycraft, so you can imagine we jumped at the opportunity to sit down with them for their first ever interview as the Special Places. Jenny and Corianton spilled some deets on how they started out and whether or not they are secret (or not so secret) lovers. Now we're doubly looking forward to seeing what they have in store for us at the Spectacular.

TIG: How did the Special Places concept come about? How did you meet and how did you decide to start playing together?

Jenny: I believe we first met through friends at a Lucksmiths show in 2001. Then he came to my housewarming party bearing a houseplant, and the rest is history!

TIG: You're kidding! I was at the show (alone) and imaginary Dana was celebrating her birthday in the balcony of that show too! It was a few months before she and I met for the first time. I had *no idea* that was even more magic dust sprinkled there! I guess it makes even more sense that I've been describing you as sweetheart folk. Is there a better term or sub-genre that you consider yourself to neatly fit in?

Jenny: Perfect! You really are smarter than the average bear...

TIG: I don't know about that... Are there any pre-show or practice-time rituals that you have in place for when you meet up?

Cori: We light candles around a picture of Zack Duffy {BOAT}.

Jenny: Well, Cori does. I'm more a Mark McKenzie kinda girl. As for practice, it generally consists of a couple of hours of beer and girl talk and 30 minutes of actual singing!

TIG: I actually expected that... You don't have any releases yet. Are you working on that?

Cori: Yes we're working with Chris Munford (Tullycraft producer) on an incestuous Tullycraft tribute track. As soon as that's done we're gonna jam out some sort of EP or seven-inch.

TIG: Do you have a vision for what you want it to sound like and achieve?

Cori: We want to sound like Simon & Garfunkel on a teenage reality dating show.

Jenny: I'm just excited about finally having a recording of these beautiful songs that Cori wrote. And we'll finally have something at the merch table besides buttons!

TIG: Nice! And t-shirts please? Are you thinking digital, cd or vinyl releases?

Cori: Vinyl with MP3 downloads, perhaps?

TIG: What would you consider the most amazing honor, a sign that you've accomplished something really sweet (within or outside of the Special Places since I suspect that with all the other things you rule at there's a bunch of benchmarks you have on your to do list)? For example at Three Imaginary Girls, we've always dreamed of playing scrabble with Stephin Merritt or having Thanksgiving dinner with Peter Buck would be so choice.

Jenny: I would like a bicycle tour of Denmark by the Figurines or a manicure with Dolly Parton. I don't think that's too much to ask for!

TIG: Is there a dream bill you'd like to be on or place you'd like to play?

Jenny: We've already lucked into some pretty dreamy bills: Los Campesinos! Parenthetical Girls, Darren Hanlon, Rose Melberg, BOAT. For dream places, how about a New Zealand tour? We could see Helm's Deep by day and play sweetheart folk at night!

Cori: Next stop, Nerdsville.

TIG: If you could choose someone to cover one of your songs, who would it be and what song?

Cori: I would like to hear Tom Brousseau cover "Bluebottle Flies."

Jenny: Or someone could cover one of our ironic covers!

TIG: If the Special Places was a sports team, what sport would you play?

Jenny: I could see us as a tennis doubles team, with matching 1960s tennis outfits!

Cori: Is boob-grabbing a sport?

TIG: What albums or bands are on your favorites of 2009 list?

Cori: Conor Oberst, BOAT, Hidden Cameras.

Jenny: Totally Boat!

TIG: If we could spread one rumor about the Special Places, what would it be?

Cori: That Jenny and I are secret lovers. Or that our band is named after my parent's term for genitalia.

Jenny: I was going to say secret lovers! It's not too big of a stretch. We do a lot of kissing on stage...

TIG: Do you have a favorite Winter Holiday tradition?

Jenny: I'm all about holiday rituals! Standing in the street with cocktails admiring our Christmas lights (which I have yet to help with), Swedish Christmas Eve (with way too much Aquavit), winter beers in Columbia City. Hmm. My holiday traditons seem to all involve booze...

TIG: Um, does that mean that you might already have a holiday song to cover?

Cori: I like "O Come O Come Emmanuel" but Belle & Sebastian beat us to it. Maybe our own version of Simon & Garfunkel's Latin hymn "Benedictus?"

Jenny: It's an obvous one, but I'd love to do the Pogues' "Fairytale of New York." So bitter, yet such beautiful harmonies.

TIG: What's on your holiday wishlist this year?

Cori: An acoustic flying "V" guitar!

Jenny: Tights. Can a girl ever have too many pairs of tights?

TIG: If you could ask one of the other bands on the bill an interview question, what would it be and to whom?

Jenny: I'd like to ask all of the bands what's their favorite way to honor the late, great Michael Jackson. For me, it's a tie between watching the Thrill the World dancers beat the worldwide record of simultaneous Thriller dancing (I'm so going to participate next year) and an MJ dance party in a Shelton garage.

Imaginary Interview: Skeletons with Flesh on Them... playing the Holiday Spectacular 2009

We're counting down to the big huge wonderful Imaginary Winter Holiday Spectacular at Chop Suey on December 23rd {at which we'd be sincerely honored tol see your fine booty at}!

We are so delighted to have Seattle band Skeletons with Flesh on Them on the evening's bill with The Special Places, The Nightgowns, Wallpaper, and The Redwood Plan. On their 2009 album, All the other Animals, they've combined straightforward sweet pop guitar and songs vultures and lust that keep us on our toes and giddy.

I recently chatted with Scott of SwFoT about where that graphic band name came from and find out if they really are as nice as their songs suggest...

TIG: I thought I read somewhere that the band name was inspired by a Radiohead lyric. Is that true or did I dream that?

Scott / Skeletons with Flesh on Them: It was mostly inspired by a hangover. But who knows, I was listening to a lot of Radiohead at the time...

TIG: Hmmm... interesting... Scott, you lived in Madison, Wisconsin for a while? Madison has long been whispered about in indie circles as a super-indie-friendly community - how did it compare with Seattle?

Scott: I grew up about a half-hour away from Madison, in a super tiny town. So our "big city" was Madison, and that's where we'd go to shows, got to the mall, etc. I really honestly don't know much about the music scene there...I didn't start playing music until I moved out to Seattle. I think Madison is neat, but it's so small, and it's culture is dominated by the University, it felt like a place to be 22 forever.

TIG: One of the things I love most about SwFoT songs is that paradoxical Smiths' talent of melding cheerful melodies with vivid, sometimes gloomy lyrics. Is that intentional?

Scott: I wouldn't say it's intentional on my part, but it's an accurate observation about the songwriting. For whatever reason, all I want to write about is dark and gloomy stuff, although for the music, I like it to be energetic and upbeat. It just makes sense to me that you would be tapping your toe and humming along to a song that is about human extinction.

TIG: What or who influences the band and your music?

Scott: I can't speak for the guys, but for me, I was inspired early on by Jade Tree bands like Promise Ring, Jets to Brazil and Pedro the Lion. Another huge band for me was Sunny Day Real Estate, I was actually pretty obsessed with them. If I hadn't listened to Jeremy Enigk in those formulative years I don't even know if I would have picked up a guitar later on

TIG: From reading Andrew's imaginary interview, it sounds like your album All The Other Animals came out exactly as you had hoped. Are you working on a follow up release?

Scott: Well, to say it was exactly like we hoped would be far from the truth. I like it, and I think it's an improvement from our 2007 EP, and I think it's a fine reflection of our sound from that time period, spring 2008 or so. But when I listen to it, I am thinking about what we can do to get better, both from a songwriting and a production point of view. We are planning on a 2010 release and are determined to make a better album

TIG: What would you consider the most amazing honor, a sign that you've accomplished something really sweet? For example at Three Imaginary Girls, we've always dreamed of playing scrabble with Stephin Merritt or having Thanksgiving dinner with Peter Buck would be so choice.

Scott: Bumper cars with the dude from Blues Traveler.

Scott: "You're a Mean One, Mr. Grinch" by Dr. Seuss.

In November, 2008, our dear Visqueen-er, Rachel Flotard joined her friend Justin on a trip to southern Laos to visit his family. While there, among other adventures, she visited local schools, taking all craft supplies, toothbrushes and the like she could stuff in her luggage. The visit had a huge impact on her and she chronicled the stunning details on her blog.

While at the local elementary school, she asked repeatedly what they would like more than anything for their school (besides a soccer ball), they hesitated, and said, “a floor”. During the rainy season, 340 pairs of these tiny, eager feet get wet while *inside* their classrooms.

To quote Rachel, "This outrages our inner Kevin Bacon."

French Miami do their "God Damn Best" on Sunday at the Sunset

San Francisco band French Miami will be at the Sunset this Sunday (8/9/9) and bringing with them their post-apocolypse Modest Mouse song "God Damn Best" which has convinced me to don my best black blazer and chant "Whatcha going to do with all that, whatcha going to do with all that love" over and over.

For the first few bars I was skeptical. Two listens of the MP3 later, I'm totally down with French Miami. Want more? Watch this video of "Science Fiction" to see a quick transition from Ian Curtis to Ian MacKaye to J. Robbins to wacked out synth.

Bumbershoot preview: Lenka

On the Bumbershoot schedule this year, Australian-born, LA-based singer/songwriter Lenka is the closest thing to a pop star on the roster. When Lenka is at her best is when her songs are ridiculously catchy, upbeat and fun. When she played at the Triple Door at the beginning of the year, I wrote:

She’s lovely and her songs are cute and poppy – completely crush-worthy. She came on stage about 8:30 and opened with “Trouble is a Friend” – and playing with a full, four person backing band and in the warm confines of the Triple Door, the song sounded huge.

...

If this show wasn’t sold out, it was very close and the crowd seemed to be very receptive to her pop songs and several people sang along with the choruses to “Trouble is a Friend”, “The Show” and “Don’t Let Me Fall”....

KEXP's annual BBQ on Saturday

Ideally summertime is all about getting sweaty and silly at free outdoor music shows. And guess who sticks to their ideals? Our provider of independent, new music, KEXP. Their summer concert series at the Mural Amphitheater in Seattle Center is running over the next few weeks to bring you a plethora of pitch-perfect bands for free. This Saturday, the 8th happens to be their annual BBQ from 2-9 pm and you know it’s going to rock your socks off.

Bumbershoot preview: Dyme Def

On their Jay-Z sampling single "The Game Needs Me", Dyme Def made one of my very favorite boasts in hip hop: "I'm the future, wondering where the past went; I'm ahead of my time so the future is past tense."

Modesty isn't Dyme Def's most visible trait but it doesn't seem unfair. The young trio from Renton have been one of the biggest acts in Northwest hip hop for the past few years and they may have the most potential. Each album and EP and mixtape they release (and they're quite prolific) seems to be an advancement over the its predecessor with the beats (from hot-shit producer Bean One) growing more intricate when they need to or more subtle when the songs call for it. The rhymes are more assured and confident.

The most recent release from Dyme Def is their Panic EP, whose release party at the Crocodile marked the club's first hip hop show since it's reopening (and they were pretty rare before that) and by all accounts, the night was quite the event: a sold out affair with appearances by some of the biggest and most talented artists in the flourishing hip hop community. Such a party outdoors, in the mid-afternoon would make for one of Bumbershoot's obvious "can't miss" sets.

One of the many reasons to head to the Sunset this Friday night: The Nightgowns

I've been sitting on The Nightgowns' Sing Something for at least a couple months now, and I don't know why it's taken me so long to sing this band's praises. They're basically a synthpop quartet, but not in the twee and cute way, and also not in the Hot Chip dance way. Instead, they've found just the right mix to let those clean guitar riffs and crazy synth riffs share the spotlight and create some really awesome -- and quirky -- pop tunes. It also doesn't hurt that the lead singer sounds British, even though these boys are from Tacoma.

Which brings us to the reason why I'm finally deciding to talk about The Nightgowns -- they'll be at the Sunset Tavern in Ballard next Friday night, and if you're an indie pop lover you'll want to be there too. Also on the bill are TIG favorites: BOAT and The Special Places.

My favorite tracks on Sing Something are easily "Buoy" and "Working For A Living," but I also like how the general tone of the album dies down for the final two songs, "Pppps" and "Gone With The Wind." The former is a song about how you always have more to say to that special guy or gal even after you've "telephoned and talked forever," and the only way to say it is with a P.S. and a P.P.S. (all the way up to a P.P.P.P.S., in this case).

Here's a live performance of "Working For A Living" from the band's CD release party earlier this year. Someone please check out the show next Friday so I can live vicariously through you!

Bumbershoot preview: Sleepy Eyes of Death

Sleepy Eyes of Death are a mostly instrumental rock band that puts on a very visual live show. They use lights and smoke to accentuate their sound, which blends atmospheric synths in the tradition of M83 with reverb-heavy guitar chords, while being a loud, intense rock band who turn the volume up to eleven. While putting more of an emphasis on the visual aspect of their live set, the ear-pounding intensity is the closest thing you're likely to get to recreating the My Bloody Valentine experience in a live setting.

I'm cautious to give too big of an endorsement to Sleepy Eyes of Death because I have a friend in the band, so I'm trying to stick to the facts and tread lightly. It should be taken for what it's worth but I really do enjoy watching the band's live show and think the Sky Church at EMP is an ideal location because they can accomodate the band's setup.

DJ Spooky That Subliminal Kid, aka Paul D. Miller in professional settings, may be the biggest thinker in music today. Last year, I went to a One Pot dinner where he was the guest and it was a joy listening to him talk about the music industry and his ideas of copyright law and intellectual property. After that dinner, we all went over to Nectar, where DJ Spooky had a funky DJ set, playing lots of classic funk and soul and mixing it with more contemporary hip hop. I wrote of that night:

Mason Proper offers free remix EP; plays JITM this morning, Chop Suey tonight

If you're headed to Chop Suey tonight to see stellastarr*, you may want to get there kind of early (doors are at 7) to catch the first band, Mason Proper.

Mason Proper, who call themselves on their website "major producer of textiles in the north american territory" are actually an indie rock band from Michigan. They have an earnest, straight-forwardness to their jangly guitar-rock sound. I've so far been enjoying the songs I've heard on their MySpace page. Still, their cover/mashup of Kanye West's "Love Lockdown" and LCD Soundsystem's "Get Innocuous" takes some bigger risks and has a bigger payoff.

The band has offered a remix EP available for download, which can be obtained here. If you're up early, you can also catch Mason Proper at 8am on "John in the Morning" on KEXP (90.3 FM or kexp.org, as you all surely know) and, of course, about twelve hours after that at Chop Suey with stellastarr* and Wild Light.

Recommended show: Black Francis at the Triple Door this Sunday

I am sure I'm not the only one who has set every alarm clock in her home to go off at 10a on Saturday, which is when tickets go on sale for the two Pixies dates at the Paramount (the all ages shows take place November 12 and 13).

But the nice thing about being in Seattle this weekend (besides the temperatures in the 90s), is that we get a shot of Black Francis live and in person this Sunday night (August 2) in the lovely AIR CONDITIONED Triple Door.

Since finding out that Mr. Francis is playing Boise, ID with Doug Martsch, I'm wondering if there will be any surprise Seattle friends taking the stage with him for a song? Hmm... I bet Kurt Bloch would be a great side kick for "Where Is My Mind." What other pairings would float your cruise boat?

This isn't a duet, but it is the video for the wonderful (easy to sing along to) song "I Sent Away" from SVN FNGRS. He's so cute in a hoodie!

Tonight: We Are Golden at the Triple Door

After the past few days, I am willing to recommend any show that promises air-conditioning. Having said that, tonight's show calendar boasts a show that I am quite enthusiastic about, which happens to also be in a venue that has AC.

We Are Golden is the duo of theater legend Sarah Rudinoff and Gretta Harley, an acclaimed musician who also at Cornish College and their show tonight promises to be a huge extravaganza - in a good way. Their music is includes elements of blues, jazz, cabaret, rock and pop. When I interviewed the ladies from We Are Golden at the beginning of the month they told me some details about this show:

Make your Wednesday night {Starlight} Mint-y fresh

This Wednesday (July 29th) Oaklahoma's Starlight Mints will be at The Crocodile in support of the fresh out of the oven album, Change Remains (released last Tuesday).

I like to think of them as poppier Flaming Lips who spend more time in coffee shops than Radio Shack. Their daydream lyrics are juxtaposed against Gordon Gano-esque vocals, dogged chimes, violins, guitar and cymbal crashes -- all pushed to the forefront in the most loving of ways.

And the first Starlight Mints song I ever fell in love with? "Submarine #3" from the brilliant album The Dream That Stuff Was Made Of. Here's an unofficial, but does the job, video so you can hear what I'm going on and on about:

This weekend I started to make my way through the big stack of cds that has come in recently to... listening to them one by one. I look forward to it because there's usually a couple of gems in there that I probably never would have heard otherwise.

This time I found a few for which I'm uber-excited to include in a future podcast (need to work on that next)... and a couple of the most stellar ones from the bins were two Casy and Brian releases: "no fiction" 3 song 7" (out on ufrecords) and "beesides" 4 song 7" (pretty amazing gold vinyl with gold foil stamped covers out on don't stop believin).

From the sound of the new Dead Weather album, I think that Jack White should book them to open on their next tour. I can already tell he'd make fast friends with Casy and Brian. They could tell him all about their method of harsh beautiful lo-fi melodies that command the sences and perk up any room. Jack would eat it up!

And perfect timing, Casy and Brian are playing in Seattle tonight (Tuesday night 7/28) at The Greenhouse Music Hall - a venue I've never heard of but already have fond feelings for because it's all ages and sometimes goes by the nickname The Green Hizzy. C&B will be sharing the bill with Herr Jazz, Masters and Johnson, What What Now.

Dejha Record Release to intoxicate the Sunset tonight

If you live in Seattle, you might hear her work with say the Rotten Apples spun again and again overhead at hang-outs like Linda's, remember when she played bass for Daylight Basement, or actually saw the raw diamond diva hit the jag-line between J. Jett and P. Houston live with bands Ragazza or 3-D S&M or The Pin-Ups.

Dejha Colantuono sounds as tough and tender as her suave songs, which get an expansive feel from Matt Bayles (Pearl Jam, Murder City Devils, Minus The Bear, Patrol) and no less than twelve musicians helping out on her next-level new solo LP, "Tea & Vodka."

It definitely has more finesse with its ferocity, but I'm still listening to it to acquire enough ideas for a review. However, if you're a fan too we should both hit The Sunset tomorrow night for the hometown record release, as Dejha is starting her nine date tour appropriately in Seattle to introduce new songs like "Color Blue," "Plus Minus Plus," and "Waltz For Lucy."

Only one more day until the Capitol Hill Block Party!

To prep, I've been perusing the to see what I have in store.

One of the most talked about Seattle bands as of late is the New Faces. They may be one of the younger bands on but they have the kicks to keep up with the likes of the much more seasoned bands. They remind me of a young Kinks with their heaps of serious hooks and solid songwriting. Make sure to head over to the Vera Stage at 4.45p on Saturday (July 25) to see for yourself.

The countdown to the Capitol Hill Block Party has begun! In less than a week tons and tons of the coolest bands will be taking one of three stages in the lovely (and likely warm) Pike Pine cooridor.
