Tonight in Seattle:

Tiny Vipers

Recommended Friday night activities: Tiny Vipers at 112 Printworks and Bandolier at the Sunset

Tiny Vipers and screenprinted posters and Bandolier in Seattle

This Friday (August 5, 2011) brings a full evening of Fremont-Ballard fun.

Once we change from our work clothes into our weekend superhero outfits, let’s head over to Fremont’s 112 Printworks for opening night celebration, premiering a show of screenprinted art by David D'Andrea with live performance from Tiny Vipers.  The beautifully understated music stylings of TV starts at 8p, which is perfectly timed to allow us just the right about a minutes to enjoy the in-printshop performance, peruse the 112 Printworks’ walls of prints and get to the Sunset (allowing at least 30 minutes to find parking or a ride over there and a splash of a ThaiKu yojito).

At the Sunset, Bandolier will be celebrating their record release with a show and dance party!  Kicking off the night, Detective Agency, Goldie Wilson (also celebrating the release of their cheery surfer-folk-rock CD!!!) and DJ sets by Jet City Soundsystem will take to the stage and the decks.

See Tiny Vipers at the Fremont Abbey on Saturday

Chelsea blogged about a then-forthcoming Tiny Vipers record called Life on Earth not too long ago, which was just released less than two weeks ago on Sub Pop to critical acclaim.

After touring the east coast, Jesi Fortino brings her Tiny Vipers alias, voice and guitar to the Fremont Abbey Arts Center for her CD release show Saturday night. It's all ages, tickets can be obtained here and the Fremont Abbey is located at 4272 Fremont Ave., N.

New Song by Tiny Vipers

Tiny Vipers second album, Life On Earth, is due out July 7th on Sub Pop. This Seattle resident has enchanted me. The first song to be released from the album is "Dreamer." Listen to it!

There is something so delicate and yet so solid about Jesy Fortino's songs. Her carefully placed syllables come from between lips that you feel will crack every time her deep voice rises. But they won't. Her music is somber and solid and she is stunning. I can't wait for this.

Photo Essay: Tiny Vipers w/ Grouper

at The Vera Project

I recall the first time I saw Jesy Fortino (Tiny Vipers) play a show. It was in Vancouver and it was in a church turned community hall and it was the one of the most magical shows I saw last year. Everyone was sitting in pews in the dark listening with only a small lamp by her side on stage for lighting. The ambiance at the Vera Project wasn't as divinely dark but the mood was just as introspective the moment she started playing.

Best of 2007: Joseph Riippi's minima-lists

Anyone who knows me outside of the HTML world knows two things:

  1. I am a big guy.
  2. I don't know my way around HTML very well.

In order to thwart my big-guy status, I've done many things over time. First, I enjoy minimalist art a lot more than big, bombastic art. This carries to music as well: I think the Arcade Fire are gloriously over-rated (too big) and prefer the more subtle stylings from big bands like that of Broken Social Scene. Arena rock was great. But it's over. Let's move on.

In any case, given that I like minimalism and I don't know my way around HTML very well, I've opted to display my lists for 2007 WITHOUT the bombast of YouTube videos and such. You want to hear a sample of something? Ask Google. They're small guys and they know their way around HTML. I'm sure they can find you a YouTube video or free MP3.

That said, here are my lists for the TOP SEVEN best albums of Oh SEVEN (in general) and the TOP SEVEN best albums out of the Northwest:

Best of 2007

  1. Radiohead—In Rainbows
  2. Amon Tobin—Foley Room
  3. Elliott Smith—New Moon
  4. LCD Soundsystem—Sound of Silver
  5. Philip Glass and Leonard Cohen—Book of Longing
  6. The Blakes—The Blakes
  7. Slow Six—Nor’Easter

Burn to Shine: Bright Seattle stars

Burn to Shine's forthcoming Emerald City edition is quintessentially us. Like the other houses featured in the previous three Burn to Shine installments, this house was destined to be destroyed... but not before some stunning musical performances by great local performers like Tiny Vipers, Eddie Vedder, and Burn to Shine curator Benjamin Gibbard.

Bumbershoot 2007: Tiny Vipers Interview

Jesy -- I know I said "just kidding" about the back-up singing, but I was really serious! Watch the video...

Latest comment by: ransom: "you're not very good at interviewing, you're too vague and also you kept the artist in the dark the whole time, the video was shaky and you can hardly hear what shes saying from the music in the background and the crappy mic. Jesy on the other hand is cool.. "

Tiny Vipers — Hands Across the Void

Tiny Vipers -- Hands Across the Void
The entire CD has a theme of uncertainty, those embarrassing moments of being laughed at by others.
