It's Popfest time: NYC Popfest 2011

PopFest season is soon upon us!

The first of many PopFests happening this year is the NYC Popfest, taking place from May 19th to 22nd. Now it's in 5th year, the lineup looks incredible with fantastic pop bands from the US along with bands from the UK, Sweden, Australia, Canada and Japan. And it's not too late to find a last minute sale train or plane ticket and join me there! Full Festival passes and show tickets are still available.

There's too many to name but really stoked to see the likes of Betty & the Werewolves (UK), Soda Shop (NYC), Dream Diary (NYC), the Felt Tips (UK), Silver Swans (SF) and Procedure Club (CT) and always a crowd favourite, Go Sailor (US). Also, just announced is the FREE all ages daytime show on Friday, May 20th at the Paul Smith Sale Shop in Brooklyn with Ian & Emma of Pocketbooks (UK) and Rose Melberg.

The NYC Popfest will take place all over the city (and isn't it beautiful this time of year?) at various venues throughout the city including the Cameo Gallery, Spike Hill, Santos, the Rock Shop and the legendary Cake Shop. Oh man, the Cake Shop. Is this for real? You can have your cake and pop music too?!

I'll be there with camera and notepad in hand, so if you can't make it (are you sure?), check back at tig and I'll recap all the amazingness.

Imaginary Mixtape: NYC and SF Popfest edition {May 2010}

2010 Popfest

May is a magical month here in Seattle. We've got spots of sun teasing us with summer promises, Sasquatch anticipation running rampant, and the warm glows of SIFF oozing with the best international indie films. There's only one reason we'd ever want to leave our emerald city bubble during this sweet spot of the year... a good ole fashioned PopFest!

This year, the month of May brought with it two very enticing reasons to head elsewhere: The New York City Popfest {May 20-23, 2010} and the San Francisco Popfest {May 27-30, 2010}. To mark these special events, we've gathered up some of our favorite songs by folks playing these festivals which includes a couple cover songs, a not-yet-released Math & Physics Club song and some rarities to up the popfest ante.  If you were one of the lucky folks that caught any of the NYC or SF Popfest shows, let us know how it went!

Best news of the day: Jeff Mangum performed last night in NYC

Out of all of the doom and gloom circulating in the news as of late, a bright spot!

Beloved Jeff Mangum of Neutral Milk Hotel infamy took the stage at last night's benefit for Chris Knox at Le Poisson Rouge in NYC performing for about 20 minutes. Some attendees armed with cell phones captured the moment {for listening not so much for viewing} for us all to enjoy vicariously.

A quick google search finds that tickets were $75 -- which is a steal considering the the benefit show also included performances by Yo La Tengo, Kyp Malone (of TV on the Radio), Portastatic, Claudia Gonson of the Magnetic Fields, Sharon Van Etten, and The Clean. So far it looks like over $40,000 has been raised to help New Zealand icon Chris Knox recover from a series of strokes he suffered last year.

Setlist (thanks to Consequence of Sound):

  • Oh Comely
  • A Baby for Pree
  • Two Headed Boy Pt. 2
  • In the Aeroplane over the Sea
  • Engine

A lil more video action...

Latest comment by: keenan dowers: "OK, yeah, I could only get about a minute into "Oh Comely" because I was too irritated about the people singing along. I get that it's a really special moment, but I hate when people just think about what's best for them, and not what's best for their ...

The Wooden Birds in Brooklyn

Wooden Birds

at The Bell House

I came to the party late on American Analog Set. A couple years ago I was invited to an event deep in Brooklyn for a publicity company celebrating their tenth year in business. Broken Social Scene played for a small crowd of jaded music writers. Andrew Kenny was there; his fiancée (wife?) was one of the publicists at the agency. I didn’t really know him outside of being “the guy who covered "Line of Best Fit" on a split EP with Ben Gibbard.

Discount tickets for Stephin Merritt's new opera

OK, so it's not in Seattle (and how I wish it were!), but because it has to do with our (my) favorite eccentric genius artist-who-only-wears-brown, Stephin Merritt, it's newsworthy to me! Our dear SM has created a new opera/musical based on Neil Gaiman's book (and now, movie) Coraline, it it premiers in New York May 7th for a limited engagement run at New York City's Lucille Lortel Theatre.

KEXP: New York City Edition

According to a report in today’s Seattle PI, KEXP will partner with New York radio station WYNE-FM. The details include a three-hour, KEXP-produced morning program, a simulcast of John in the Morning’s weekday show, and shorter blips hosted by Kevin Cole. Viva la “Radio Liberation”!

Latest comment by: Regimond: "The sooner John Richards moves to NY and KEXP severs ties with him... the stronger the station will become. It's that simple. Richards' cult of personality has grown to the point where he is actually a liability to KEXP. His huge salary is the most obvious drag ...

Hooray for aluminum foil

I'm not sure if you know this, but chrome has been my favorite color for sometime. My love of things silver/gray and reflective makes it even harder not to trek to NYC sometime this summer to see Tom Friedman's "Alumnimum Foil" artshow on Park Ave in New York City.
