It's the weekend before Christmas which means holiday party season has kicked into high gear. This weekend there are so many shows to choose from {it's like a mistletoe'd SXSW or something} that my eggnog'd head is spinning. Might we suggest:

A holiday party with BOAT? I'll take that! Also on the bill is The Exploding High Fives who have a song "Since You're Not Here for Christmas" on their myspace which is Ben Folds cute and catchy. This confirms I'll be in Ballard tonight for this show.

The Head & The Heart / Star Lake Drownings / Your Favorite Book at Conor Byrne
As you may know, Your Favorite Book is one of my favorite Seattle performers. Star Lake Drownings killed it at hour Holiday show last year. Also, YFB shows are rare, so I'm hoping to catch a wee bit of this show tonight.

Kane Hodder are one of those bands I've known about for a long time, but never experienced. That's a terrible thing to admit, because they have been a Seattle mainstay for awhile. Founded many years ago and signed to iconic punk label Fueled By Ramen, losing two members over the years as they toured with and opened for These Arms Are Snakes, Boy Sets Fire, Stretch Arm Strong, Schoolyard Heroes, and other post-hardcore bands, I imagine many have relegated them the pile of regional bands many will always adore but never think to spring back into action.

That's why discovering their very strong Internet EP Through The Bloody Channels, We Raise Our Sails is so exciting. Opening with "Gold Fever! Catch It!" the band is unafraid to be politically humorous and melodically contagious as hell all at the same time. The serpentine guitar of the track leads one into hard rock bliss, as incredibly versatile vocalist Andrew Moore sets his standard here by going from falsettos to growls and back to straight ahead singing within seconds.

All of these guys play great. Eric Christianson leads the band with a variety of guitar styles (he ain't no punk power chord hack, but doesn't lose himself in leads either, keeping it riff-textural and rhythmically effective) and Aaron Yost takes some fancy bass chances while holding down the deep notes. Charley Potter thrashes it along on drums quite well, and second guitarist Jerome Sauer never lets you get bored either.

My favorite song is probably the third in the sequence, "The Dermatologist Has Been Eaten; Cursed By His own Hubris" (no doubt the first infectious anthem about infection that uses a semi-colon and the word "hubris" in the title; these are my boys!) which is an all out bloody rock opera in just 3:31 minutes. Moore rants straight into the next track ("Siberia 1908") and you can't help but follow his vibrato. The fifth and final song here features some finger-licking Talking Heads style funk-rock bass picking, before spazzing completely out and then you realize at the end that this band has listened to a little 80s metal in the tour van. Maybe more than a little, and maybe that isn't such a bad thing.

Look, with these song titles, I know what you're thinking: another Blood Brothers kind of avant-emo band screeching and trying to recontextualize US Maple for the tender ones. But no, this is actually tough rock and roll with a lot of flex made by some really talented guys who sound like they love stacking weird pieces of their favorites parts of the rock machine into their own garage-bound Frankenstein. I am ashamed and regretful I never saw Kane Hodder back in the day, but I am pig-in-shit happy that I may be able to catch them now.

Actually, we did catch about half of JV's great set on the Main Stage... and then had the chance to hear him play to a very small gathering the following day. The difference was staggering; somehow, JV translates better in a more intimate setting, where his stellar songwriting skills really shine. More details about that show coming soon!

The night will feature rockstar performances by local musicians and celebrities. Members of Math & Physics Club, Iceage Cobra, Head Like a Kite, Schoolyard Heroes, Speaker Speaker, Kane Hodder, Optimus Rhyme, the Pale Pacific, the Elephants, We Wrote the Book on Connectors, The Trucks, A Gun That Shoots Knives, Central Services, The Pharmacy, Tullycraft, Night Canopy, Dita Vox, Shorthand for Epic, several KEXP DJs, and many more special guests are prepared to take the stage to croon for our mutual holiday enjoyment.

Of course -- in imaginary style -- you won't need mistletoe to get lucky. The event will feature the amazing John Roderick of the Long Winters as Indie Rock Santa Claus, to ensure you get your holiday wish-list heard by Mr. North Pole himself.

"How often does one get the chance to have her picture taken while sitting on John Roderick's lap?" asked imaginary girl Liz. "That's reason enough to attend!"

"This is the best holiday gift ever – a pre-party with Sub Pop and Barsuk, followed by an off-the-hook karaoke bash!" said imaginary girl Dana. "It's a Christmas miracle!"

"I guess we've been very, very good imaginary girls this year," said imaginary girl Char.

Steve the Karaoke King (of Twilight Exit, Molly McGuires, and the Comet Tavern) will serve as KJ for the big event, which means the song selection and the sound system will both be incredible. Need further incentive? Imaginary karaoke parties always tend to attract surprise guests (including Vendetta Red's Zach Davidson and the Posies' Jon Auer at past events), and the girls will have girls will have raffle prizes galore from favorite folks like Merge Records, K Records, and Pattern 25 Records to bulk up your end-of-year CD collection. Seattle, WA, January 20, 2006 — "We're Absolutely Cuckoo" for The Magnetic Fields. That's why Three Imaginary Girls has decided to celebrate Valentine's Day this year with a 69 Love Songs Pre-Valentine's Day Bash, co-sponsored by the mighty 90.3 KEXP and the amazing Barsuk Records.

The event will take place at the Crocodile Café on Thursday night, February 9th, and will feature collaborations from tons of Northwest musicians performing their favorite tracks from the 1999 Magnetic Field's 3-disc opus, 69 Love Songs.

The long list of performers includes members of The Long Winters, Vendetta Red, Rocky Votolato, Visqueen, Tullycraft, Harvey Danger, Kane Hodder, and many more. In honor of Valentine's Day, the night will feature three great performance of love — of both the romantic and fraternal nature:

Lovebirds Eric Corson (The Long Winters) and Anna Lange (Dutch Elms) will debut their lo-fi side project, Fork and Spoon.
Newlyweds Andrew Moore (Kane Hodder) and Alissabeth Newton (ex-The Catch) will perform as their aptly named band, For Better Or For Awesome.
Rock and roll brothers Rocky Votolato (formerly of Waxwing) and Sonny Votolato (Slender Means) will dazzle the crowd with their amazingly talented genes.

"Since Stephin Merritt rarely tours, we figured the next best thing would be to have a bunch of our favorite bands cover the songs. I am giddy with anticipation," said Liz Riley, co-founder of Three Imaginary Girls.

Three Imaginary Girls will also run a "Tell Us Your 69 Love Songs Love Story" themed-contest. Readers can submit their stories of how 69 Love Songs impacted their love lives, and the best submission will receive a pair of free tickets to the show. The imaginary girls will read the best stories between sets throughout the night.

"The crazy thing about 69 Love Songs is that no matter where you are romantically, it's fitting," Dana Bos, also a co-founder. "You can rejoice, court, break-up, kiss, wed, laugh, fight, or drink with that album."

"I can't wait to hear who sings 'Underwear,'" said imaginary girl Char. "I hope he changes the lyrics to 'A pretty imaginary girl, in her underwear.'"

Isn't it funny how sometimes you feel like you know someone, and then, once you find out more about said person's favorite music, you find out that maybe you don't really know that person? Take Megan Seling, music writer from the Stranger, fellow judge of all things cute and off, and all-around sweetest girl you could ever know, right?

So we thought as well — until we attended Megan's birthday party this past Memorial Day, and got to see her current favorite bands Kane Hodder, Idiot Pilot, and Mon Frere play in her honor. At this point, we began to realize that under that winsome, charming exterior lies the fire of a woman who likes to RAWK until her ears bleed. To which we say, fuck yeah!

What a great bill to see at our first night at the new Paradox space in Ballard. First up, Mon Frere, who won the "most spirited" award for the night with their homemade commemorative "Happy Birthday Megan" t-shirts. They were even sweeter than those awesome vegan chocolate chip cookies someone baked for the birthday girl.

I loved them when I saw them at win the EMP Sound-Off 2004 awards, and, of course, I am BIG excited to have them play our Ladyfest showcase {mark your calendars: Saturday, June 26, 2004 at Graceland; learn more about it here}. They warmed the crowd with soaring female vocals, the zig-zagging guitars, and hot pink tees with white puffy letters that read, when they stand in the proper boy boy girl formation, "Happy Birthday Megan."

Then there was Idiot Pilot. I felt so lucky to be front row to see them. Most folks know that they have already been picked up by a very major label, right? They aren't even old enough to get into bars, and now they'll be playing packed amphitheaters before we know it... much to the chagrin of Muse, we're sure {and we hope}.

That frontboy-man Michael Harris has incredible pipes as well as onstage charisma, wriggling his low-belt-slung hips and bouncing off speakers, his huge mouth nearly swallowing the microphone whole in order to transmit the mighty power from his tiny frame. He's like Thom Yorke meets Hutch Harris meets Steven Tyler. Whoa.

Then, what can you follow up A Kid Rockstar backed by an OK, Computer? The most ROCKING, LOUD, METAL, and MAGNETIC band I've seen in a long time! KANE HODDER!

I must confess that I left before Kane Hodder's set... however, I've had their EP "Frank Exploration of Voyeurism & Violence" in ye olde car CD player since the show, and I've been quite impressed with their sound. I hear elements of the song-writing prowess of the Divorce, but with a far heavier, nearly eighties-influenced guitar, and with these incredible screams that I could call banchee-like, except that they're coming from a male.

Kane Hodder is a band well-versed in the teachings of all their hardcore forefathers. But what makes them magic to even the most sugar-addicted-poppy-fans is that fact that they don't rely on the {basic screech here} --> {falsetto here} --> {goat ears here} equation that most folks aspiring to be the next big hardcore+punk+metal thing fall prey to.

They manage to incorporate the screech + falsetto + goat ears thing, but they do it with melodic elegance. They seamlessly progress from jagged guitar rift to symphonic vocals to determined bass lines, all the while managing to meld their individualistic glories into a focused rock machine. Lead-singer Andy Moore didn't just rely on his multi-faceted vocal stylings to seduce the audience. He posed and postured and strutted across the stage. It's nearly like he went ballroom dancing with his own fury.

Also worth mentioning: Andy is quite the karaoke-r. He stunned the crowd with his showmanship twice at our 2nd Annual Rockstar Suicide Karaoke Bash, first with his rendition of Loverboy's "Workin' for the Weekend" {more cowbell!!} and next with the Divinyls' "I Touch Myself."

So to say this most eloquently... "We heart Kane Hodder. We want them to heart us."

Yep. You should seriously prioritize "See Kane Hodder live" on your indie-rock to-do list. Looks like they're touring the country most of June, ending up back in Seattle at Graceland on June 30th. They're also set to play Bumbershoot 2004, you know, if you're into that whole thing...

Seattle, WA, May 13, 2004 — You've seen William Hung sing 'She Bangs' and George W. Bush sing 'Gay Bar.' But have you seen Sean Nelson sing 'Like a Virgin?'

You could.

ThreeImaginaryGirls.com, "Seattle's sparkly indie-pop press," will be hosting a Rockstar Suicide Karaoke Silent Auction Bash on Thursday, June 10, 2004 at the Crocodile Café to celebrate their second anniversary.

The night will feature rockstar performances by local artists and celebrities, including members of Harvey Danger, the Catch, Kuma, the Spits, Kane Hodder, Fey Ray, XXX Audio, Radio Nationals, the Fastbacks, American School of Warsaw, Black Nite Crash, the Malinks, Jet City Fix, Slomo Rabbit Kick, and Tennis Pro, as well as KEXP DJs Quilty 3000 & Darek Mazzone, photographer Charles Peterson, Joan Hiller of Sub Pop Records, Chris Olsen from NoVoteLeftBehind.net, Carla DeSantis from ROCKRGRL magazine, and Pete Hilgendorf & Ben Heege of Blue Disguise Records.

The trick to suicide karaoke? The rockstars can't practice their songs beforehand. It's up to show-goers to decide what songs each rockstar performs via a silent auction. Once the auction ends, each rockstar takes the stage, and performs whatever song was chosen by the bidder. Auction winners will also receive gifts from the karaokers, such as signed CDs, posters, t-shirts, and other merchandise.

"Anyone who attends can bid on the song each rockstar will sing. Last year, the Pale ended up singing 'Roxanne' (The Police). I think it's one of the best things I've ever heard," sighed imaginary girl Liz.

"And hearing Erik Blood from the Turn Ons sing Journey's 'Open Arms' was a very close second," added imaginary girl Char.

KJ extraordinaire Biff Moss will host the event, and promises even more excitement. Biff is an experienced auctioneer, so expect live auctions. And best of all, his system has the capability to plug in electric guitars. Yes. The rockstars will be able to bring their own guitars (or guitarists) to fake along with their karaoke performances. Experts predict karaoke will reach such great heights.

As if you needed further incentive, the Imaginary Karaoke parties always tend to attract surprise guests, including Vendetta Red's Zach Davidson and the Posies' Jon Auer (both of whom unexpectedly took the stage at their Buttrock Karaoke contest last summer).

"I'd highly suggest getting there early to get a spot in the karaoke rotation," said imaginary girl Dana. "How often do we all have the chance to sing onstage and through the amazing sound-system at the Crocodile? Everyone sounds amazing. Well, almost everyone does…"

Three Imaginary Girls are no strangers to the Seattle rock scene. During the past two years, the girls have reviewed hundreds of live shows and CDs in Seattle and beyond. They also book local music showcases, and have hosted various rockstar karaoke events, such as their Labor Day buttrock karaoke party, their Silly Love Songs Friday the 13th Pre-Valentine's Day Bash, and an indie-rock holiday party that raised hundreds of dollars for local charity, TreehouseForKids.org.
