We here at imaginary headquarters get a ton of email each day (don't get us wrong, we send out our fair share too). To help manage our overflowing inboxes and the influx of press releases that come our way, I have some instinctual reactions (hitting the delete button) for emails that have the below phrases (this is just the first four on my auto-delete list):
"Jeff Buckley-meets-Elliott Smith-meets-Dave Matthews"
"classic funk reggae riddums"
"think a fusion of The Eagles and Rick James"
"Pioneer Square's FAVORITE Cover Band!"
Let's count the number of infringements the below email has (and let me know if you have any RED LIGHT descriptive terms that make you hurl):
Lenny Kravitz Announces
IT IS TIME FOR A LOVE REVOLUTIONNew album set to hit stores February 5, 2008
Virgin Records to Release New Singles "Bring It On" and "I'll Be Waiting" to Radio this fall
NEW YORK, NY (October 4, 2007)— Lenny Kravitz says it's time for a revolution and he is launching a musical movement to do just that with the release of his 8th studio album on February 5, 2008. The album, entitled It Is Time For A Love Revolution (Virgin Records America), is Kravitz's first new release in over three years; the record is a thunderous rock 'n roll call-to-arms, featuring a universal blend of soul, funk, and jazz grooves and the undeniable anthemic lyricism that's been his trademark from day one.
"I love this record and the feel of the record," Lenny Kravitz said of the release. "I felt like a kid playing in my bedroom, and that's the most important thing you can tap into, that feeling of being free."
That freedom is the fire inside It Is Time For A Love Revolution, which is sonically and spiritually as vibrant as Kravitz's debut album, Let Love Rule. Regarded as one of the great rock musicians of our time, Lenny Kravitz has achieved tremendous critical acclaim and commercial success with a succession of groundbreaking album releases, multiple # 1 singles on the Billboard Top Singles charts and an unparalleled collection of awards from throughout his career, including GRAMMYs, American Music Awards and MTV Video Music Awards. Written and recorded over the course of the last year, in various locations from New York to Miami, Paris, the Bahamas and Brazil, It Is Time For A Love Revolution holds up as one of the Kravitz's best albums with its raucous rock 'n roll jams, heavy drums, tight hip-shaking grooves, frenetic guitars and Kravitz's unmistakable croon.
Featuring 14 new songs, the album once again finds the multi-instrumentalist writing, producing, arranging and playing all the tracks on the album, which he has done on all of his releases throughout his career. As the album title indicates, Kravitz sings songs of love and spiritual revolution, calling on people to open up and let love in their hearts. He also isn't afraid to get political, using his music to draw attention to the current US war in Iraq and the Vietnam era. From the above mentioned singles "Bring It On" and "I'll Be Waiting," as well as "Love, Love, Love," "Dancin' Til Dawn," and "I Want To Go Home," It Is Time For A Love Revolution represents the characteristics that has made Kravitz a vital musician for 18 years.
Kravitz plans to tour behind It Is Time For A Love Revolution for two years after its release, but first he will help bring in 2008 with an exciting live performance from Times Square performing two songs during NBC's world famous New Years Eve with Carson Daly.

"Regarded as one of the great rock musicians of our time" made the red lights flash for me.

And the use of "feeling like a kid in my bedroom" and the "feeling of being free" in the same sentence.

As far as general red-lights for email deletions, I judge by if it could be turned in to a witty "Thats What She Said". Because usually they are for..."medications."

"Lenny Kravitz" was sort-of the 'red-light' - but that's just me...

I agree with #4 commenter.
I hate using the word "gay" as a descriptor, but I'm pretty sure that's the only appropriate word for the title It Is Time For a Love Revolution.
And uh, I know which channel not to watch New Years stuff on.

"tight hip shaking grooves"
I can't believe I actually read that far,
even though I was just skimming.

Jesus. Do major labels now have 19 year old interns writing their official press materials? That's like the biggest cliche ever written.

Sorry, I didn't even read it. What did I miss?

Calling Mr. Kravitz a "Vital musician"...
The best sentence... "He also isn't afraid to get political, using his music to draw attention to the current US war in Iraq"... It's about damn time someone brought attention to that.

Suddenly I feel like I'm not alone anymore. You all feel our pain!
Also, I agree with #4. And #9. And really, I agree with what everyone says on this thread.

"Lenny Kravitz has achieved tremendous critical acclaim and commercial success with a succession of groundbreaking album releases" was what hit the scoreboard for me.
I know he's sold a shit ton of records but I don't know of any critic that takes him seriously as an artist or any album he's made that's "groundbreaking".

"Classic funk reggae riddums" -- please tell me that wasn't me! Uh-oh. I do get lazy.
My beef isn't the content of PR in the subject line, it's the subject lines that take up your entire fucking in-box. A certain publicity firm specializes in paragraph-sized three-headline-tacked-together subject lines that make me lose concentration so easily I tire before I dare open the e-mail up.

Yep. Lenny Kravitz is the total suck.
I guess that makes this a well written press release.
Its tone does match the subject matter.... ::hack::
