I am one

John in the Morning kicked off my day by playing "I Am One," from the debut Smashing Pumpkins record Gish, which, IHMO, is the only Smashing Pumpkins worth a listening damn (bring on the flames).

The song was a nice trip down memory lane... but I never realized how much the guitar work sounds similar to Guns 'N Roses "Welcome to the Jungle." Am I in a pre-coffee deluded state, or do you hear it too?

I have always thought this back since I first bought Gish ... Good to hear I'm not the only one who thinks it.

I hear more "Paradise City" than "Welcome To The Jungle" in it. But, I did like Gish a lot when it came out.

No love for Siamese Dream????

I am a little bit disappointed, which is an awfully hard word to spell.

Gary @ 2 - you're even more right! That is what I'm hearing. Thanks!

I have to agree with #3, Siamese Dream is good too. Well, I like Mellon Collie & The Infinite Sadness as well.

I've been trying to find a venue for this opinion, but I think that the absolute apex of the Pumpkins was "Drown" off the soundtrack to Singles. That song, although somewhat out of place on the Seattle-centric movie's soundtrack, might be one of the perfect songs that encapsulates the early 90's musically for me.

I like "Drown" as well (except for the wankery extended guitar tuning at the end) and was always a huge fan of "Gish" -- and yes, totally "Paradise City." That was the pre-caffeiene-got-up-before-6a-to-get-parent-to-airport insanity talking earlier. ;)

That crazy guitar part is exactly what I love about "Drown". Total excess, just like the 90's.

Weird! Dana, I heard it this morning as well and thought "I don't remember this song having so much guitar noise... has indie rock turned my ears soft?"

I always thought Gish had more of a Black Sabbath-lite sound to it myself. I think the Smashing Pumpkins were the first band I fell in love with, so it really hurt when I realised that Billy Corgan was a horrible person and that Mellon Collie and the stuff after was, on the whole poor. I'm glad we have all agreed that Drown rocks.
