New releases for the week, from Easy Street Records
Submitted by Jflores on July 17, 2007.Seattle's wunderkinds of syntho-electric instrumental moodiness has a brand new record out today. Sleepy Eyes of Death celebrated the release of Street Lights For A Ribcage last Saturday night with a show at the Croc. Their live shows incorporate tons of smoke, lights, visual stimulations, and of course beats! They don't have any others shows lined up, but check their website for updates and to hear the track "Mean Time Til Failure" from the
new record!
I have a soft spot for Suzanne Vega, so I am keen to hear her new one called "Beauty & Crime," which is a tribute to her beloved home of NYC. No Depression panned the record, but I am still gonna give it listen.
Here's the rest of 'em:
BEHOMOTH - Apostacy
DAVID BOWIE - Up Close & Personal (DVD)
CHEMICAL BROTHERS - We Are The Night
THE EDITORS - An End Has A Start
EINSTERZENDE NEUBALTEN - Palast Der Republik
FAUST - So Far
THE KNIFE - Silent Shout (Deluxe Version)
MAGIC NUMBERS - Those The Brakes
MXPX - Secret Weapon
NILE - ITHYPHALLIC
RAISING THE FAWN - Sleight Of Hand
KLAUS SCHULZE - Kontinuum
SLEEPY EYES OF DEATH - Street Lights For A Ribcage
SUZANNE VEGA - Beauty & Crime
YELLOW CARD - Paper Walls
Just one week until Tegan & Sara release The Con, but you can check out some of their new material at the free all-ages in-store this Thursday, July 9th @ 4p at the Queen Anne Easy Street! Pre-sale for The Con will be available during the in-store.

Hairspray Soundtrack!?!
It was actually out last week, but we did venue sales for the the pre-view performance of the movie last night @ the 5th Avenue Theater.
1700 people showed up and paid $25 bucks a pop (it was a benefit)to see the movie before it hits theaters this Friday.
Whats interesting is that we sold 105 copies of the Soundtrack, which will surely move it into the top 20 for the week.
We were literally MOBBED both before and after the show and although it was fun to be part of such a frenzy, I am still scratching my head over the whole thing.
I refused to sit in on any of the show because in my book there will always only be one Hairspray!

Jesse -- remind me to tell you of my loathing for contemporary music theater one day... ;)
That does sound completely baffling.

Yeah, Travolta is no Divine.

I'm still looking forward to the new film, though. I've never seen the musical incarnation at all.

Yeah I don't get it either. You take a movie; you make a musical of it (already a bad idea in my book). Then, you make a new movie of it, even though the first one was just fine? With John Travolta? As a woman? Are you serious?
Yet people will eat the shit up. I guess that's why you do it. Who needs artistic integrity or merit when you've got a blockbuster for sale?
I'm going to go eat my leftover birthday cake and forget about this, High Fidelity: The Musical, The Wedding Singer: The Musical, and so on et cetera.

Yeah, many of these movies-to-musicals (-to-movies) are superfluous. That said, I already have tickets to Mel Brooks' new Young Frankenstein musical, which is getting a pre-Broadway tryout here in Seattle (like Hairspray did) next month.

I just saw a billboard for that show and groaned aloud. I feel like the musical genre is completely devoid of new ideas...
