Bumber BIG FUN

Bumbershoot just sent out their final music lineup this weekend, and it's a doozy (in the best of ways). Normally I wouldn't just cut and paste it in like this, but for some reason I love how dense this checkerboarding of bands looks...

THE SHINS • WU-TANG CLAN • PANIC! AT THE DISCO • FERGIE • SEAN PAUL• JOHN LEGEND • JOSS STONE • GYM CLASS HEROES • KINGS OF LEON • CROWDED HOUSE • LUPE FIASCO • +44 • BLACK REBEL MOTORCYCLE CLUB • STEVE EARLE • RODRIGO Y GABRIELA • ANDREW BIRD • DEVOTCHKA • DEVENDRA BANHART • TED LEO AND THE PHARMACISTS • ZAP MAMA • GOGOL BORDELLO • THE FRAMES • IAN BALL (OF GOMEZ) • KILL HANNAH • LYRICS BORN • ANBERLIN • NORMA JEAN • ART BRUT • THE GOURDS • HEAD AUTOMATICA • BARRINGTON LEVY • THE AVETT BROTHERS • TOKYO POLICE CLUB • AQUEDUCT • THE GREYBOY ALLSTARS • ROKY ERICKSON & THE EXPLOSIVES • MENOMENA• K'NAAN • THE DAMNWELLS • BOUNCING SOULS • SOULIVE • THE APPLES IN STEREO • THE HOLMES BROTHERS • JOHN WESLEY HARDING • MY BRIGHTEST DIAMOND • BERT JANSCH • ALLISON MOORER • FLOATER • MAE • YUNGCHEN LHAMO • THE HORRORPOPS • RYAN SHAW • THE WATSON TWINS • MAGNOLIA ELECTRIC CO. • MOCEAN WORKER • ROSIE THOMAS • IAN MCFERON BAND • THIS PROVIDENCE • THE AGGROLITES • THE RECEIVING END OF SIRENS • VIVA VOCE • THE SATURDAY KNIGHTS • OHMEGA WATTS • ROSE HILL DRIVE • THE MOTHER TRUCKERS • HONEYDRIPPER ALL-STARS • ST. Who am I most excited to see?? ART BRUT!!!! And the Shins. And maybe even Kings of Leon (even though I can't stand the new record, I've never seen them live and would like to check it out). The Damnwells and Ted Leo will be a treat, and Crowded House will be a wonderfully bizarre flashback. Grand Archives, of course.

Speaking of Grand Archives, I'm thrilled to see the number of quality local Northwest bands on the Bshoot list. We started a running list awhile back on the imagi-blog, but based on the list above, here's what I see:

  • Aqueduct
  • Menomena
  • Viva Voce
  • The Saturday Knights
  • Stars of Track and Field
  • Gabriel Teodros
  • Schoolyard Heroes
  • Seaweed
  • Grand Archives
  • Kultur Shock
  • The Cave Singers
  • Bloodhag
  • Tiny Vipers
  • The Lashes
  • Night Canopy
  • The Trucks
  • Das Llamas
  • Fleet Foxes
  • The Whore Moans
  • The F**cking Eagles
  • The Pharmacy
  • Mono in VCF
  • Iceage Cobra
  • Natalie Portman's Shaved Head
  • Lilydale
  • Central Services
  • Shake Some Action!
  • Sheaky Thieves
  • For Years Blue

Outside of music, I'm thrilled to see two of my favorite local creative editor-nerdy bar activities will be having special Bumbershoot appearances: The Salon of Shame and the Seattle Spelling Bee.

Founded by Seattle author Ariel Meadow Stallings, the Salon of Shame proves that everyone's worst adolescent writing deserves an outlet. Since 2005, audiences have been regaled with agonizing tales of teenage woe, heinous poetry and horrific high school essays. The Bumbershoot edition will feature some of the favorites from the past two years of the Salon.

The Seattle Spelling Bee will wrap up its second season with this climactic Bumbershoot event. The Bumbershoot Spelling Bee features winners of the monthly series from ReBar, and also an exhibition of awesome spelling prowess of regional youth bee champions. Benjamin Anderson and Josh Malamy will host the event as always.

And remember: Bumbershoot is still offering 30% discounted pre-sale tickets, but only through this Thursday, July 12th. So get on it and order!

Also, please feel free to share: What shows are you most excited to see at Bumbershoot 2007?

Of course three of the attractions that would draw me to the 'Shoot are currently scheduled on different days (Menomena Saturday, Apples in Stereo Sunday, Mike McGonigal's Yeti showcase Monday). Grr.

And, again, IMHO, that "insider deal" really isn't much of a deal, because they require you to pick a specific day (when there's still more than a month and a half of schedule-shuffling to go). And they want $5.50 in service/handling fees.

If you're only going for one day, it would be smarter (and a little cheaper) to wait until tix go on sale at select Western Washington Starbucks stores on 8/4.

WU-TANG REPRESENT!
If only half of the Clan shows up does it still count as a Wu show? I still think they could take one day off the bill and make it an unbelievable line up as opposed to stretching it out to get an extra day in. I don't want to go everyday but there are at least one or two acts each day that I don't want to miss.

How can it be the Wu with OBD/Big Baby Jesus/Dirk McGuirk?

Let's also remember Flatstock, which is free to everyone attending Bumbershoot.

You'll find tons of posters that YOU MUST OWN RIGHT NOW OH MY GOD by ridiculously-talented artists... all of whom are better than me.

Yay Flatstock!
