Who'd you see this weekend??
Submitted by imaginary dana on June 11, 2007.I just walked in from the stellar Okkervil River show at Neumo's, which closed out the Noise for the Needy multi-day benefit in sold-out, high-energy style. Their final encore of "Westfall" was breathtaking, confirming that somehow sweethearts like Will Sheff and the gang can write and perform a murder ballad that would make Cave or Cash proud.
How about all of you? Anyone catch one of the final Pretty Girls Make Graves shows? How about the Wrens? Other shows? Tell us about all about 'em...

I saw no bands this weekend due to my exams :( which sucks because I missed the Twilight Sad playing our local. You must hear their record.
However, I have made up for this by buying tickets for Jeffrey Lewis in a week or two and, more importantly, LOS CAMPESINOS!!! when they come to Birmingham in October. I will be counting the days.

Closest thing I saw to a show this weekend was the Amon Tobin DVD that came with Foley Room.
I worked most of the weekend on a manuscript for a commercial we're doing in Zurich next week. Yay free trip to Europe!
I did get the new Boat record in the mail, though. Which is awesome. I love Boat. And I love reviewing them. Which I'll do. Tonight or tomorrow.

I made a day trip to NYC yesterday — 8 hours round trip!
Now I'm tired.
I played Guitar Hero for the first time ever with someone who works for the company that makes it (it's made here in Boston!). Actually I think it was Guitar Hero 2. In any case, I ruled!*
I also booked (well, then canceled, then re-booked) my Seattle tickets! From July 4-8 I'll be in your city, and I'm available to sign autographs, make appearances, etc. Contact my management to book.
Sillies, I'm just kidding! I hope to meet and party with and every imaginary boy and girl there is.
*On the Easy level. Then I tried Medium, got seriously frustrated and smashed the guitar to pieces. Ok not the last part but the rest is true.

My alarm clock goes off at 4:30 am Sunday mornings so I skipped the PGMG show - or, more accurately, went home before PGMG went onstage (which will be bothering me for quite a while), but if Thursday counts as the weekend, before I saw CSS that night (awesome, by the way!) I went to Town Hall to see Christopher Hitchens talk about his new book and he scolded me (in jest) for shortening my name when he signed my book. It was amazing!
imaginary dana said on June 11, 2007:
ChrisB -- how did you shorten your name? From Christopher to Chris, or is there some other dark name secret we don't know about?
ChrisB said on June 11, 2007:
Yeah, exactly. That was what he was referring to since he's a Christopher. There are no other "dark name secrets" - or at least ones I'm willing to share. ;-)

Okkervil River were amazing. Best show I've seen in quite some time. Good mix of songs from Black Sheep Boy and new material. Can't wait for the new record.

We Wrote the Book on Connectors on Saturday at the High Dive was fantastic. Really good crowd, big big crowd. Everyone went nuts when WE played that one song about eating cake. The night ended with an acrobatic stage dive from the Keyboard player on to some unsuspecting concert goers. Good thing he is a little man. Twas a fun night, plus I got a free pair of sunglasses from the Oakley people. word

Das Llamas at the Sunset Tavern in Ballard on Saturday Night were awesome. I love, love, love high-energy rock and roll, and these guys know how to do it right. Plus, the lead singer plays a little keyboard and guitar while singing. Totally kick ass! Also, they look like a rock band, which I always appreciate because too many bands these days (for my taste, anyways) look like frat boys. Das Llamas, though, look like they came off a three-day bender, with no time to shower, before hitting the stage. The guitar player has the crazy eye, Osbourne style. He can rock you with one look. If you're not familiar, check 'em out...totally worth it.

Lillydale, Land of Talk, and Rosebuds friday night at Neumos. The show was just freakin' awesome. Pictures on the flickr group. The rosebuds really looked like they were having fun playing; they just couldn't stop smiling. Made for a great set.
