American Music: crap or not?

By now I’m sure you’ve read Kirstin Dunst’s wicked burn on the American Music Industry. She went on record as saying “It's harder to find great music these days. We have Amy Winehouse now, I guess and Bono (of U2). But still our biggest bands back home are crap. We don't have a Bob Dylan; where are all the great writers? We don't have enough new great talent. We just don't have the inspirational songs that pop out."

I’m wondering what tig readers think. Is she right? Are American artists crap? Or is she just not looking hard enough?

Discuss.

You left out this part:

...but admits she isn't a fan of the artists which dominate today's charts.

Which leads into the quote above. In that context, I'm with her. I think she's talking about the Good Charlottes and Red Hot Chili Pepperses and John Mayers when she says "our biggest bands back home are crap." I think she's talking about the ones that make the cover of Rolling Stone and spin unstoppably on mainstream radio. I would reckon most of the imaginary world would agree — isn't that why we're here, in our little corner of the cybersphere, indulging ourselves with all the good music we can dig up from beyond the tired same ol' same ol'?

But young Ms. Dunst may have not thought her statement through very well — and apparently doesn't realize that neither Bono/U2 nor Amy Winehouse are actually American.

Summary: Kirsten Dunst should read tig.

First, I can't imagine why folks would think that Kirstin D's opinion on the state of good music in America is a learned statement.

Second, the way it is worded above -- is she saying that Bob Dylan isn't American? Or that he didn't just put out a record last year? Just wait until she finds out that Death Cab for Cutie, Bright Eyes and the Gossip are also from the states. I could go on and on and on...

Perhaps she just trying to talk her way into being the next Gwyneth Paltrow (since she's courting the lead singer of NME-fav Razorlight)?

What....I think that I like American music. Right, I do.

Is Amy Winehouse inspirational? Is Bono that inspirational at this point? I mean it was the legendarily defunct "iPod Roulette" that outed Bono's weak lyrics to "Try and Throw Your Arms Around the World." The Spider Man soundtracks are actually pretty terrible.....so maybe she is getting it from that. I like Dunst though. I am not counting her out. I think TIG should just collect a bag/box of inspiring American CDs to send to her. Do Merge CDs count since they were made in Canada?

But yeah...I mean American music is pretty decent these days.

I don't want to list bands as inspirational. But the last Thermals record was pretty inspiring. Right...who's with me?

Bob Dylan, I mean he's Bob Dylan. I think he's kind of out of even everyone's league. But even so.....he hasn't really transcended himself . Love and Theft...ya got me....but other than that...I mean....I'd rather put on his old stuff.

Hah! She should! Kirsten, we welcome you.

But yea, does she think Amy and Bono are American? Or was quote taken out of context? I'll go click-through and read now.

No longer defunct! iPod Roulette just went down for a day when Erik's iBook melted. But it's back and up to entertain us all! Read all the entries right here, yo.

KIKI SHOULD GET THE F OUT!

If she doesn't like American Music she should move to Skank Island where Perez Hilton can't track her stupidity.

Thursdays make me hostile.

I was seriously hoping that this discussion would conjure up an F-bomb or two. Thanks, Jesse! :)

Oh yea, live and acoustic at the Triple Door on May 11th... though I think Ken is French now. So they only halfway count.

To be fair tho, as the great Jeffrey Lewis put it;
I'm sure the thing is probably Dylan himself too
stayed up some nights wishing he was as good as Ginsberg or Camus.

Culture clash is all it is

She's right. American music is crap if your exposure to it is via Rolling Stone magazine, MTV (what's left of video programming) and Top 40 radio. I think that's the point she's trying to make, that what's being fed to most of America is all this "crap," and that bands mentioned in some TIG replies (Bright Eyes, Gossip, etc.) are hard to find, especially when you're not lucky enough to live in a coastal city.

Thank your lucky stars you don't live in Arkansas, because if you did, your favorite "indie rock" band may be Fallout Boy.
