Tonight's Recommend Show: Rocky Votolato, Slender Means, Drag The River, Street To Nowhere at Neumo's

Tonight's stellar lineup at Neumo's celebrates the release of Slender Mean's newest EP, Rock & Roll Machine, their first new release since 2005's Neon & Ruin. While the EP lacks some of the magical hooks of their full-length, new Slender Means songs are always a reason for celebration, and their live shows never fail to please -- the chance to hear Joshua Dawson's voice ringing through the Neumo's sound system is reason alone.

Members of Slender Means have also been supporting Rocky Votolato's recent tour (including Slender Means guitarist Sonny Votolato, Rocky's brother), and we're hoping they'll be doing it again tonight for the hometown crowd.

I'm not familiar with openers Drag the River or Street to Nowhere. Has anyone else seen them before who could share their thoughts and opinions with the rest of the imaginary class?

I saw the Drag the River / Owen / Rocky Votolato show at the Knitting Factory when they were in New York. Drag the River served as Rocky's backing band for about half his set, bring some country rock to tracks like "Portland is Leaving" and "White Daisy Passing." Rocky did the old standards like "Suicide Medicine" and "Mix-tape Cellmates" solo, as is the best way for those songs, still two of his best I think.

Drag the River did a sort of drunker deep south version of Okervil River (I know Will and co. are from Austin, but as anyone who's been to Austin knows, it's hardly the South). One thing about their set, as good an opener as they were, their fans absolutely sucked, heckling Mike Kinsella as he played his delicate Owen songs. The message? Get American Football back together, Mike. I mean, seriously.

Rocky's new one, _The Brag and Cuss_ comes out next month care of the fellows at Barsuk. It's more countrified then the past stuff, fulfilling the prophecy of Rocky's writing since Waxwing broke up into part Rocky-solo, part Blood Brother (Cody Voto, the other brother, is guitarist for that raging band).

Can you imagine what Thanksgiving must be like at that house? Little kids running around while Rocky, Sonny and Cody sit on the front porch with a bottle of Makers, arguing over what song to play? I hope they play a lot of Prince.

I've heard that "Raspberry Beret" is one of the few tracks all the Votos can agree upon.
