Tonight's Recommend Show: Badly Drawn Boy at Neumo's

Damon Gough, aka as Badly Drawn Boy, is not only a notorious drunk but also a notorious heckler — of his own audience.

I saw him at the Showbox years ago on one of the worst nights of my life (long story that involved waaaaay too much vodka and an unfortunate encounter with an ex making out with his new girlfriend in close proximity to me, and me with head spinning, thoroughly convinced that I would be alone and sad forever). All I remember about the set was Damon slurringly chewing out the crowd so badly that the polite Seattle audience actually booed him.

Apparently, the antics continue, all these years later: At SXSW last week, Badly Drawn Boy played at Stubbs, opening for everyone's favorite superband du jour, The Good, The Bad & the Queen. A battle of two Damons ensued!!

Damon (Gough) spent the show hassling one reveler for South by Squatting(tm) in the front row through the BDB set just to be in the front for TGTBATQ, to catch Damon (Albarn's) eye. And really, who could blame her? igLiz and I spent quite a bit of our festival time South by Squatting ourselves. Poor girl shouldn't be blamed for the lineup order, and should be commended for her staying power!

Anyhow, go to Neumo's tonight and you might be lucky enough to get badly drawn yourself.

Damon Gough is way to into himself. I remember I saw him shortly after he won the mercury prize for Hour of the Bewilderbeast, all he could talk about was winning the prize and all the money that came with it. He's a cult of his own personality. A good alternative tonight would be to check out Sondre Lerche at the Crocodile. His new record is a power pop tour de force. Hopefully he'll play more of that and stay away from his lounge record.

I'm with you Toby... Sondre is going to bring the house down at the Crocodile tonight. It is a show not to be missed.

Not to harp on the whole SXSW thing, but at his SXSW performances, my friends with excellent taste kept going on about how AMAZING Sondre and his band were. (I had to miss him because of my devotion to seeing Matt & Kim and the Fratellis - I weep!)

When I have seen him perform in the past, it's clear that he's more than just singer-songwriter with band. The sound is full, lush, and intuitive. Not to mention he's stunningly charming with the stage banter. I'd say he's pulled a bit from Dean Martin in the suave department.

Yeah, but if you want to go out and be insulted by a rockstar, then surely BDB is the show to attend, right? ;)

Actually, I'd rather see Sondre or Lily Allen tonight myself. Is it just me, or are there a freakishly high number of amazing, high-profile shows this Monday night? Was there some sort of "Show up in Seattle on Monday night, March 26th" memo that I never saw?

I agree - Sondre all the way. And Lily Allen's in town too? The Croc may be sparse tonight... which means a better Sondre-to-fan ratio. (Yum.)

I'm glad someone finally mentioned Lily Allen's show tonight (even if it has been sold out for quite a while) - which is where I'll be this evening.

When have there been this many great options on a Monday night?

I do prefer Lerche to Badly Drawn Boy, but I really, really like the idea of comparing STF vs. LTF ratios. Unfortunately, the Sondre-to-Fan ratio will unquestionably be much better than the Lily-to-Fan ratio tonight!
