Gang Gang Dance make avant-garde dance-pop with tribal beats, synths, and highly varied textures - sounds cool, right? Hear their latest album, Saint Dymphna, at 9pm on Monday's Inside Track (where a new album is played in it's entirety). On Friday (also 9pm), it's jazz pianist Lowell Davidson's lone album, Trio - recorded in 1965.
The members of the Feedback Farm have been trying desperately to quench their thirst for knowledge about the Kingdoms of Life. One was spotted holding a tape-recorder up to a pool of superheated salt-water containing exotic bacteria, and while the story hasn't been confirmed yet, several others were reported injured in an attempt to attach contact mics to a fairly tall Chestnut Oak. Tune in at 9pm on Wednesday to hear the full report.
Emily S will provide the world with Scandinavian sounds on this week's Thursday Night Feature. Do extreme cold and jagged coastlines make for a fertile musical environment? No one knows for sure, but listening in at 9pm might give you a pretty good idea.

The New Music Show returns (as it does every other week) this Wednesday at 9pm. Music Director Jon P will broadcast an hour of entirely new recordings. Don't think that he won't. Just try him.
The Rebellious Jukebox is on Wednesday, too. Two DJs or community members will take turns playing their music libraries on shuffle while the listening public calls in and votes on whose music is best. 4pm.

Our biggest event of the year, WXYC's 80s Dance, is this Sat. Nov. 1st at Cat's Cradle! We've got a great line-up of WXYC djs who will be spinning from 9pm-2am.
Tickets are $5 for UNC students and $8 for general public
Tickets will be on sale all week (10/27-10/31) in the Pit from 11am-2pm! Look for our table on the side of the Pit closest to the Student Union...Get em now to avoid long lines at the door!

The WXYC 80's dance is coming to Cat's Cradle this Saturday, Nov. 1! Get in costume and dance the night away to the sounds of the decade of excess. Tickets are available to students this week in the pit.
...A-and the best way that is to tune in to this week's Thursday Night Feature -- various XYC Dj's will be spinnin' the hits of the 80's. 9pm.
Monday's Inside Track (where a new album is played in it's entirety) features Petit Oiseau, a new studio session from bassist William Parker's Quartet. On Friday, treat (or trick?) yourself to a special inside track in honor of the 70th anniversary (+ a day) of Orson Welles' War of the Worlds broadcast. Join Mr. Welles at 9 pm sharp!
Plus, Music Director Jon P hosts another installment of the New Music Show, bringing you one solid hour of new releases. Wednesday at 9pm.

Thanks to everyone who came out to the Local 506 for WXYC's Backyard BBQ last night! We couldn't have asked for a better turnout! There was plenty of bbq and the bands were great!! We'll let you know when the next live show will be, but for now be sure to tune in to the Backyard BBQ show every Sunday from 8-9pm for more local music. Ryan M's hosting a Thursday Night Feature all about the synth-driven sounds of Italo Disco. Turn it on wherever you are Thursday at 9pm. Then, dance, if you want.
The Feedback Farm focuses its beam of razor-sharp social commentary on the upcoming Presidential Election, and all the dudes and dudettes involved. What will happen if [candidate] wins the election? What is [candidate] trying to pull, anyway? Where is that Ron Paul Blimp? The only feasible way to answer these questions is to tune in at 9pm on Wednesday.
The new Sub Rosa compilation Oh, Run Into Me, But Don't Hurt Me -- Female Blues Singers Rarities 1923-1930 graces the Inside Track (where new albums are played in their entirety) at 9pm on Monday. On Friday at 9pm, hear Guitar Boy Superstar, a collection of recordings from the first half of the 70's by Sir Victor Uwaifo -- the first African musician to achieve a gold record.
I guess it's a pretty political week for WXYC - the next Rebellious Jukebox contestants are Barack Obama and John McCain! Hear their playlists square off, and vote for the best jams. 4pm on Wednesday.
The WXYC Backyard BBQ show returns -- this Friday at the Local 506. It's free, Caltrop + Blag'ard + In the Year of the Pig are playing; there is barbeque. Doors open at 9:15pm and the music starts at 10pm. The only decision you have to make is how you'll thank WXYC for providing such an excellent friday night.

WXYC has been nominated for an mtvU Woodie Award in the category of Best Campus Radio Station! From mtvU:
"For the first time ever, mtvU is honoring 20 pioneering college campus radio stations committed to bringing students the latest indie and emerging music. Lauded for championing artists before they receive mainstream success, these student-run radio stations represent the new music vanguard long since abandoned by traditional FM radio."
Each week you have the opportunity to vote on semi-finalists from various regions around the country. This week you can vote for stations in the Southeast (which includes WXYC!) VOTE HERE!

The Carolina Review (unc's conservative publication) meets Students for a Democratic Society head-on, on the Rebellious Jukebox. Basically, two participants set their music libraries to shuffle and alternate playing whatever comes up on air. Listen in Wednesday at 4pm and call in to vote for who you like!
What with faxes and electronic mail and all, who needs the real mail anymore? Well, all those folks that work at the post office, for starters. Oh, and the Feedback Farm. At least this week - wednesday 9pm.
Plus - the Inside Track brings you Bridge Out!, a new album born from the free jazz collaboration of Randall Colbourne and Paul Flaherty (that's 9pm on Friday).

Hey, what's going on at 9 pm on Monday? The Inside Track, thats what - where an new album gets played in it's entirety. Hear Digi Snacks, the fourth solo album from comic book enthusiast RZA.
The Inside track'll be back on Friday too, with something else. The Final Solution recorded an entire soundtrack filled with 4-part harmonies and funky guitar for Brotherman, a blaxploitation epic set to be released in 1975 centered on the story of a pusha-turned-preacher. The film never got made, but the good folks at Numero Group have let the OST live on.
Plus, Music Director Jon P brings another edition of the New Music Show to the world. It's exactly like it sounds: an hour long smattering of brand new (oboy!) music. Wednesday at nine pm.
Isaac Hayes died a little more than a month ago, but WXYC can still give him a damn good send-off. Nancia O serves up a Thursday Night Feature dedicated to his extensive musical legacy at nine pm. RIP, Mr. Hayes. RIP.

The bike racks are full, the streets are crowded, and everyone is tripping over the uneven bricks... it could only mean one thing... welcome to a new semester at Carolina! And of course, as everyone knows, the most exciting thing about the start of a new semester is that WXYC will be hiring new student DJs. So... if you love music and want to be part of the only organization on campus that will fully nurture your musical mind, body, and soul while at the same time exposing you to the wonders of radio, come to the WXYC interest meeting. Here are the fast facts:

Have you ever been a little curious about that special sensation known as inebriation? Sure, all it takes is one parts you and several parts alcohol, but what exactly is going on in there? The Feedback Farm intends to find out. This Wednesday, tune in at 9pm for a scientific journey through the human body throughout the drinking process, from beginning to (sometimes) bitter end.
With the cosmic disasters foretold by the Mayan Calendar a mere four years away, Heather W certainly picked an opportune time for her Thursday Night Feature: Songs for the End Times. Tune in this Thursday at 9 for three hours of apocalyptic music.
Finally, round out the week with the Inside Track, where a new album is played in it's entirety. This Friday at 9pm power up your radio to hear some improvised noise, courtesy of Yellow Swans and their album Deterioration.

You'll want to get your tightest fitting, most brightly-colored spandex for Wednesday's Superhero-themed Feedback Farm. What is a hero? Why does the hero have such a hold on the imagination of our society? And seriously, what's with the capes? Wednesday at nine.
Thursday brings the exciting Imagining Burma, a Burmese Film Series. For more details see below.
Later on Thursday evening, 9 pm in fact, Peter P will share with the world a Thursday Night Feature on the psychedelic music that emerged from that epicenter of flower-power: Los Angeles.
Wrapping up this eventful week is the Inside Track, where you can hear newly released albums played in their enirety. Tune in Friday at Nine to hear Rare and Unissued Recordings from rockabilly legend Charlie Feathers, and to hear Black Taj's latest album, Beyonder, just do the same on Monday.

Looking for something to do this Thursday? Come on down to Weaver Street Market for the kick-off celebration of Chapel Hill's first Burmese film series, co-sponsored by WXYC!
"Imagining Burma: A Post-National Film Series", aims to critically explore the issue of blurred national boundaries of Burma through a program of feature-length films and documentaries. The series will open with a party from 6pm to 9pm on July 17, 2008 at Weaver Street Market. This outdoor event will feature our beloved Music Director Jon P spinning Southeast Asian music... and free Burmese cuisine! A screening of The Burmese Harp will follow at Southern Rail (The Station) from 10pm to midnight.
Also, be sure to check out the other screenings and events throughout the summer. On July 31, the series will continue with a pair of documentaries, Our Burmese Days and Burma from 7pm to 9pm at Hanes Art Center on UNC's Campus.

Keep your listening habits as current as WXYC's mailbin. How? By listening to the New Music Show, of course! Hosted by Music Director Jon P, this Wednesday at nine.
Wash all that new stuff down with a tall, three hour Thursday Night Feature devoted to songs on the topic of killing! Tessa L and Montgomery M will explore the murder ballad throughout history in it's various forms, from British and Scandinavian medieval songs through early American Folk and present-day works. If only there was a topically related adjective to describe a show this cool...
Nestled cozily between the first two radio events in this announcement is an in-station interview with Harrison Haynes of Les Savy Fav fame, conducted by Montgomery M. Tune in Thursday at 6 pm to hear a fascinating conversation and, if you're lucky, details about the band's upcoming show at Nasher Art Museum.
