Tonight in Seattle:

"Babylon" by David Gray

I remember hearing this song about 10 years ago. I don't remember exactly when, or where, or why, but all I know is that when my friend burned this CD for me a couple of years ago, I heard this song again and got *really* excited. Criticize David Gray for whatever you want, this song is amazing. Try not singing along to it, I dare you.

What the hell is he singing about? Did he just discover the "echo" effect? Who authorized those soaring synth strings? Who even cares, this song makes me feel like I'm driving a convertible somewhere sunny, somewhere the exact opposite of where I am now (New England, winter).

Please stand in awe at the fact that this man made the verse of a hit single with the following lyrics: "If you want it, come and get it, for crying out loud." Moreover, that is precisely the part you can't NOT to sing along with.

Also he rhymed "loud" with "doubt," maybe pronounced "dowd" like he had a cold. You wish you could.

I'm with ya, XLAbester. I hear it's unhip to like David Gray, but back when White Ladder came out, I had a beloved roommate named Dave who came from Ireland and played the album constantly, and I grew very fond of it myself. Sigh, I wonder what ever happened to Dave from Ireland.

tearing this song apart would be too easy, but i'll just state that i never got into david gray because i wasn't in the midst of a midlife crisis when this song came out. oh, an unpopular folk artist suddenly knows how to program a drum machine? give this man a grammy.

yeah, definitely NOT hip to like david gray... but if you're after "hip" there are plenty of other super-smart, super-important young bands out there to like before anyone else does.

i for one, don't care, and adore david gray... a very gifted, welsh former punk rock singer (from the early 80's) who watched his father die a horrible, slow death that took years and came out the other side of it toting an acoustic guitar and in-touch with his feelings. "white ladder" is one of the best albums of the 90s, a rare start-to-finish treat.

a lot worse things could happen in the world. (britney spears, george w. bush, ipods, a spice girls reunion...)
