No new Postal Service record... ever?

Thanks for the big bad rainy Monday morning bummer, Aversion. According to them, the Postal Service may never record that follow-up record to 2003's Give Up that I, for one, have held as a constant musical anticipation in the back of my brain all these years.

Here's what Aversion had to say about it:

That long wait you sat through waiting for a new Postal Service album might stretch on until, well, forever.

The electronica/indie-pop duo isn't rushing forward to make a follow-up to 2003's Give Up (Sub Pop). In fact, the whole notion of another Postal Service album "isn't a priority" for either singer Ben Gibbard or programmer Jimmy Tamborello, according to Spinner.... Although the act started working on a new album way back in the summer of '06, Gibbard admits it may never come together.

Really? Never, Ben??? Say it ain't so.

As an aside, I was amused to read Aversion's review of Give Up, which states:

That doesn’t compensate for the fact that Tamborello couldn’t program a VCR, let alone a song. Watery and vacant, The Postal Service’s success, Gibbard’s longing humanity, comes despite the cold, impersonal programming on this album.

I wonder, in hindsight, how Aversion feels about that one?

This makes me so sad. The Postal Service is hands down the best thing Ben Gibbard or Jimmy Tamborello has ever done. *Sigh*

EDIT: On second though, could anything that the Postal Service record even stand up to the aura of Give Up? I mean, right now I'd say that the odds are that anything new would be a disappointment to a lot of the fans. And you know that all the "cool" websites are salivating at the chance to rip any new Postal Service a new one to prove how "indie" they are. Maybe we should be happy we got Give Up and live with that.

I never really expected there to be another Postal Service record. In other news, there are Magnetic Fields tickets available at ticketmaster at the moment. Get them before scalpers do. Both shows.

I'm not really surprised, or disappointed. Give Up was good, but I don't know if the world really NEEDS another Postal Service record.
But "couldn't program a VCR"? Ouch. And unjustified. If there's a weakness to the Dntel sound it's in melodies, not programming (which is why collaborating with Ben worked out so nicely).

God, I haaaaaate Aversion.

Seriously, though, I still stand by that review. If anything, I find Postal Service grating now where they were just meh then, though I think that's more due to the fact that the frat boys who lived in the house behind mine blasted that album *every night* one summer. I think in a few years, more people are going to come around to my way of thinking. Maybe not.

That's all I'm going to say on that. We have a policy not to argue about published reviews (which I'm sort of bending a little here). I've said my bit on it. Feel free to use our comments (or this forum) to say yours.

Aw this is too bad. But I thought that they had always said it was a one (or two?) time hook up? Still, they were dear c:

That's too bad. That's funny about Aversion's review, though... it looks like they had to eat a bit of crow on that one...

This sucks Give Up was amazing...I agree tho that a sophmore album would be a disappointment to Postal Service fans because of high expectations; however I still would like to see another album created. 5 years comeon on the Postal Service website they made it sound like making Give Up was quick and easy so why cant they make another one??

It's better this way. Postal service belongs underground, it deserves to be itself. A melody doesn't need hype, or reviews for that matter. When we've all forgotten about it, that's when we can hear it again.
