I've watched way too many Grammy presentations over the years, because while I agree with Erik that their logic is often questionable, I still can't look away. Last night's show was one of the stronger ones, performance-wise. They clearly put a lot of effort into wrapping a huge amount of talent into the Staples Center to commemorate 50 years. That said, some highs (Amy W? Out of her skull!) and lows:
-Kanye and Daft Punk: Yeah, it was cool to finally see the French robots on tv. But I really think Kanye's overrated. Erik, again I agree with you: He's got mad-skills at producing, but he should stay *behind* the booth.
-Foo Fighters: Can someone please explain to me how they're mega-huge, but they always sound like crap live? I've never heard Dave G. actually sound good in a live performance. It makes me speculate.
-I have to admit while I'm not a huge fan of the music, I can't deny the power of voices behind both Josh Groban nor Andrea Bocelli.
-Best Collaboration with Vocals: I didn't see the award handed out, but just read that Robert Plant/Allison Krauss took that home. Amen! That record is gorgeous.
-Swore I read that both Chris Cornell and Eddie Vedder were supposed to perform the songs that had them up for best original track from a movie/television show, but I saw neither performance. Maybe they axed 'em? Too bad the track from "Dreamgirls" won. I swear it's from at least 2 years ago...!
-Amy Winehouse scares me. What the hell was up with that acceptance speech?
-Herbie Hancock winning Album of the Year sent me over the moon. Complete shock when pitted against powerhouses like Winehouse and Kanye. It's about time some recognition was given to a jazz album in that category.
