Like the late Lee Hazlewood, Jimmy Webb or Tom T Hall, he considers himself a POP singer and songwriter, so such work should be natural. Actually, in 1968 & 1969, Van Dyke Parks, someone just as inventive & odd as Merritt, wrote music for Datsun's TV ads.
I'd rather he use his lovely voice shilling for Volvo's V70 wagon than for Hummer, Honda or (Heaven's to Murgatroyd!) BMW. So happy to hear the refreshing sound of Stephin Merritt in a commercial and not James Blunt, Josh Grobin or Clodplay...AGAIN!
If he DOES indeed live now in my hometown, I wonder WHAT he drives.
Met him once and he's really quite a nice character.
