I think there's a lot of trendiness going on with listening habits, but, like Dana said, a lot of these bands only have one really cool album in them.
The indie rock mentality is only exaggerating this. I get the feeling that we're living through an era where novelty is really the hip factor and a lot of crap that's totally hyped today will be more or less forgotten. It's sort of like all those new wave and alternative bands that got really big because they were, in essence, weird, only to totally fall off the radar shortly after that.
