I can't say I disagree with you re: the new album, but I feel the need to defend my boys.
The disconnect you're experiencing has a lot to do with how the album was put together - basically stringing together tracks from their 12 months of EPs released last year and giving them some studio love. So, yeah, they don't all really go together conceptually as a stand-alone album, but if you consider it a "best of, re-tooled" from the EP project then it's an awesome treat.
PS - Bishop Allen? How could you NOT know they were once local? You must not drive in Cambridge too often...
