The best music from the recent soul revival has largely came from England. With the obvious exception of Sharon Jones & the Dap-Kings, people have been flipping for the retro sounds of British ladies like Duffy and Amy Winehouse.
Another singer, Alice Russell may not be a bigger name than Duffy or Winehouse but she does have a bigger voice. She had just released her sophomore album, Pot of Gold, at the beginning of the year and it's very solid and well-written. What stands out, though, is just how much space her voice occupies. While she is backed by a tight, funky band, they're there to compliment her harmonies.
On record, she sounds like a charming and commanding performer who demands (and receives) the attention of everyone in the room, so I am very anxious to catch her set at Nectar tonight. I really hope her set includes her thrilling take on The White Stripes' "Seven Nation Army" (which I'll embed below). Regardless of what she plays, I can't imagine it being anything less than electric.
Alice Russell is at Nectar with Big World Breaks, $10, 21+.
