Tonight in Seattle:

Streaming previews of The Decemberists new Hazards of Love album

the decemberists

As I was browsing ChrisB's list of releases today, I saw that The Decemberists' new album was out today. The band drew me into their fold with their last release, The Crane Wife, so I was curious to see how the two albums compared.

There are two streams of the album that I can find, on Entertainment Weekly (must sign up to listen) and on their Myspace (no login necessary).

What do you think of the band's latest material?

I wasn't the biggest fan of the crane wife, since castaways & cutouts I really haven't felt like any entire album has measured up, even though there is plenty to like about all of them. thus, I wasn't expecting much from hazards of love, but the modern-day rock-opera-esque track that a few of the djs on KEXP have been playing... it's really starting to win me over. I don't know about the rest of the album, but that track is all swanky come-hither guitars and lyrics that stick to my ribs. enough that I might have to give the whole thing a spin sooner than later.

I just bought this album today. I'm going out of town so it should be some good travel listening material.

I like Castaways and Cutouts but I happen like Her Majesty a little better. If my chronological memory serves me, Her Majesty was my introduction to the Decemberists back in the day, so that probably has something to do with why it's still my favorite. I guess if I'm ranking Decemberists full lengths it would go
Her Majesty
Castaways and Cutouts
Crane Wife
Picauresque (Sp?)
Nothing against Picauresque, I like it a lot but something has to be last.

I've heard good things about Hazzards so we'll see in the coming weeks how it stacks up!

I agree, Victoria. I really really really disliked The Crane Wife. It felt bloated and overindulgent. It's kinda killed my love for them. I don't know why, but it makes it kinda hard to even go back to the stuff I loved, I was so disgusted with it. I got the feeling that they have started to believe their own hype, and it was kind of a nudge-nudge, wink-wink, "Look how very clever we are" album. I would like them to go back to something like Castaways. The pared down sound lets the lyrics do the work they're supposed to be doing, instead of swallowing them up in prog-rock muck. I

Disclaimer: I don't dislike anything by the Decemberists, and I think I like Picaresque the best. I also loved the Tain. Needless to say, I think this album is a monster, but I also recognize people's criticisms of pretentiousness. I guess any pretentiousness they have doesn't bother me, I kinda enjoy the literary songwriting and self-aware intellectualism
