I’ve got nothing against a fun romantic comedy – I’m sure more than a few eyebrows would be raised at my collection – but the thought of watching Confessions of a Shopaholic makes me all twinge-y. Well, maybe not as twinge-y as The Pink Panther 2 (Hi Steve Martin! I used to love you!).
Fortunately, they released a ton of DVDs this Tuesday, and there are quite a few I want to see. If I had to choose only three, they’d be:
Waltz with Bashir (Vals Im Bashir): I haven’t seen this yet, but it’s gotten so much buzz that almost everyone I know has told me that I need to view it ASAP. It’s an animated story about one man’s attempt at remembering his service as an Israeli soldier in the 1982 Lebanese war - and it’s supposedly really devastating. It won the Golden Globe for Best Foreign Language Film, and was nominated for an Oscar too.
Last Year at Marienbad (L’année dernière è Marienbad): A Criterion Collection!!! A restored high-definition digital transfer! I’m anxious to get my hands on this French New Wave masterpiece just so I can peruse the special features: an audio interview with Director Alain Resnais, three documentaries on the making of the film, the original trailers and new (and improved) English subtitles.
It’s really best if you don’t know too much about it, but the short synopsis is: A man and a woman wander around a luxurious hotel, trying to remember if they had an affair – and unravel the mystery of what is real and what is fiction.
Simon Says: The horror geek in me says that I absolutely must see this. It will either be the greatest thing I’ve ever seen or the WORST. We’ll just have to see (and it may take a lot of alcohol to convince me either way) – but seriously, Crispin Glover playing murderous twins, taking out partying college friends in the woods with booby traps?
Check out the trailer - his accent is GLORIOUS:
I am all. over. it.

I can't wait to hear what you think about all three of these, Amie. I love them all, but with the kinds of reservations that inspire conversation. Hint, hint. But seriously, you picked three awesome "movie night" DVDs to have with friends -- who may adore or loathe each one but can't deny their unique qualities and craft.

Heh. I have seen Last Year at Marienbad and love it, but it's definitely time for a refresher! The Criterion is the perfect excuse for that.

Oh, sorry, I read your comment about the extras and didn't realize you had seen "Last Year." That's a weird movie isn't it? When I was a teenager (about a century or so ago) I was a big fan of Robbe-Grillet, who was sort of the Wire (the band) of post-French symbolist writers. Seriously messing with questions about memory and reality, etc. -- which makes it so interesting these DVDs are all coming out now. The first two have extraordinary amounts in common.
