The first time I heard about The Coathangers, a bad-ass, all girl band from Atlanta, was from music writer (for now?) Christopher Weingarten's 1000 Times Yes Twitter record review project (where he reviews a thousand records this year in 140 characters or less). His review described the band's new album Scramble as "Be Your Own Pet as cartoon-saturated Kill Rock Stars no-wavers, punk rock as beach blanket bingo."
That's enough to perk up my ears, and as my initial hunch was correct, I do really enjoy listening to The Coathangers. Scramble does bring to mind BYOP (whose album Get Awkward was my very favorite of 2008) as well as Kill Rock Stars' best riot grrrl bands like Bikini Kill and Bratmobile. It's often messy, disjointed punk but they also have some surf and garage tendencies. One song on Scramble, "Stop Stomping Around" sounds like a 1960s summer beach hit, with some great girl group harmonies.
Scramble was just released on Seattle label Suicide Squeeze and the band is embarking on their first national US tour, which includes a stop Saturday night at the Comet, playing in between two favorites amongst other TIG staffers: The Whore Moans and These Arms are Snakes. It'll already be quite the party on Capitol Hill because of Pride this weekend.
The usual details are The Coathangers with the Whoremoans and These Arms are Snakes at The Comet, 9pm, $8, 21+.
I'll include two videos below because searching YouTube for videos was a thoroughly unpleasant experience (as you might imagine with their politically-charged name). Next time I'll remember to include the whole band name in quotes.

to even put this in the same sentence as bikini kill is an absolute embarrassment to kathleen hanna and co. these ladies from A-town should change their name to "Hi, we're four cute girls who formed a band after playing "RockBand" for XBOX, we're still learning our instruments."
It's kinda long but definitely applicable. Go to the Comet tonight for the Whore Moans and pray that Botch headlines the show instead of "These Arms...".

thank you. i read three imaginary girls all the time but never post here. i couldn't keep silent after that unjust comparison to bikini kill, the coathangers will be lucky if they ever put out something as meaningful as them. i enjoyed their set on saturday night, particularly the ode to gym rats (that song 'i'm going to break your fucking face." as one of the lyrics).
but i still stand behind my original description of them, it was pretty dead on. i don't think they're a good enough band to have got on such an awesome bill, that's for sure.

I'm sorry Chris--I have to say the picture of them above is more interesting than what I heard come out of the Comet Saturday night.
