It's that time of year for lovers to get their lovers something sweet and, for those that don't have lovers, to get something sweet themselves, like candy hearts.
Ah, candy hearts. Me and my 5-year-old are eating them a lot these days. "What does this one say?" She asks. "Text me." "What does that mean?" "Sort of like an email, but lame." "What's THIS one say?" "Love bites." "Ha! Ha!" she says, and then gets a stronger sugar high.
"Love Bites," for those that recall, is one great monster ballad by the one and only Def Leppard. It's been covered magnificently by Slow Skate and is available on a 7" single titled "St. Valentine." Limited to 300 marble-colored records, the packaging is oh so eco-friendly (recycled chipboard, vegetable based inks) and oh so good. Sadly it's only two songs (the aforementioned Def Leppard gem with the smooth "St. Valentine").
Slow Skate is Caitlin Sherman and Jason Goessl with a bevy of other musicians (Geoff Harper, Brian Oppel, Adam Linz, JT Bates and Jim Anton).
The release party is on Valentine's Day at the Blue Moon with Colin Nelson and local band If Bears Were Bees. Rumor has it, cupcakes will be there. Perhaps written in icing atop said cupcakes, "Love Bites"...and it tastes oh so good.
