After sorting through 597 submissions, the editors of the acclaimed 33 1/3 book series narrowed down the best submissions into their "shortlist" and announced that list over the weekend.
The shortlist includes 170 entries, or about 28% of the entries submitted. It is impossible to judge what proposals will make the best albums based on album titles alone (my three favorite volumes in the series are on The Beastie Boys' Paul's Boutique, Guns and Roses' Use Your Illusion 1 & 2 and Celine Dion's Let's Talk About Love - I like one of those albums) but there is a large handful of albums I'd love to read books on. The shortlist will be whittled down to a shorterlist of 20 to 25 pitches that become books.
My dream of writing the definitive account of Annie's Anniemal will have to be tabled for another time (and my Facebook friends can evaluate whether or not that is a good thing) but I could not be happier to run across this entry:
Leonard Cohen – Various Positions
That proposal was written by my very smart and very dear friend (and TIG colleague) Chris Estey. Consider this post a necessary, but no less sincere, congratulations to Chris and 169 of his peers.
The rest of books on the shortlist can be found here on the 33 1/3 blog. Which ones would you be interested in reading?

congrats, chris!... and sorry, chris :(
a friend of mine made the shortlist for Daft Punk's Discovery.
I've bought and read a lot of the books in the series, and for me the artist has to have some personal appeal in some way to get me into the book. that doesn't mean I'll enjoy it (looking at you, interminable Radiohead's OK Computer), but I need that starting point. looking over the list I only see a few artists (Britney, Girl Talk, Jimmy Eat World, Vampire Weekend) where my disdain will exceed even the most interesting take on the album.

I *like* Vampire Weekend and Girl Talk and even I think it's too soon for those.

Congrats on making the short list. I have to wonder how a greatest hits album qualifies:
"The Eagles – Greatest Hits"
There are several on the list that I'm intrigued by and would consider reading. Most notably a few albums I used to be in love with back in the day-Jimmy eat world's "Clarity", Rage's "Evil Empire"- to a few that I'm a little surprised haven't been written yet: Arcade Fire's "Funeral", Television's "marquee moon", Modest Mouse's "Lonesome crowded west"...
I agree that it's too soon for Girl Talk and Vampire Weekend. Let the albums settle a little bit.

Sorry to hear that Chris! But congrats to Chris E!
I'd be interested in reading Aretha Franklin, Ben Folds Five, Devo, Paul Simon, Talking Heads and They Might be Giants.

Talking Heads and Devo are a given. One on X/The Knitters might be interesting, as well as maybe Vashti Bunyan or Can. There are a million I could think of.
Oh, Chris E... you rock! Congrats dude. And Chris B., you're a winner in my heart babe.

Oh YAY and BOO, all at once! Estey, I super hope you get to write yours... and ChrisB, what a huge loss that they didn't pick yours.
Let me know where to lodge my imaginary complaint to the 33.3 management!

Thanks, Chris (!!!) and everyone! Would have love to seen Annie's 33 1/3 by Mr. B myself big time. (Liz's as well, whatever it was.)
Wish me luck -- hopefully I make it through the next round(s).
