Meghan McCain, daughter of (overshadowed) Republican Presidential candidate John McCain, writes a blog called McCain Blogette, documenting pop culture, music, and fashion while out on the campaign trail with her father. Sounds kinda like a Republican TIG, except that the 23 year-old's musical picks are not exactly imaginary (With "Never Tear Us Apart" by INXS and "Piece of My Heart" by Janis Joplin as standout tracks on her recent Summertime playlist).
But I'm not here to be all elitist and mock Meghan's snoozy music picks. Cause ya know, elitist is quite the buzz word this campaign, and from where I sit, it's one of those words that, to quote one of the most quotable movies of all time, does-not-mean-what-you-think-it-means.
Or at least, it doesn't mean what the Republicans are trying to make you think it means. Eating your greens doesn't make you an elitist. It makes you healthier. Attending an Ivy League school doesn't make you an elitist. It makes you smarter.
But making statements like the one Meghan made on the Today show this morning about her family? I'd call it pretty elitist:
"No one knows what war is like other than my family. Period."
Maybe it was just a first-timer-interviewee nervous slip-of-the-tongue. I might give her the benefit of the doubt. Apparently the rest of the so-called liberal media decided to; I haven't seen peep about this inflamatory statement anywhere other than the liberal blogs.
But something about the way Meghan emphatically proclaims PERIOD... I think she meant every (elitist) bit of it. I'll let you watch for yourself and decide...

OMG - I say "Have fun storming the castle!" at least once a week!
Let's see, what else. Sometimes I just say "Anybody want a peanut?" out of the blue. People look at me funny but every now and then someone will totally laugh.
And "Stop SAYING that!"
God I loved that movie. Love it still. One of my top ten of all time. Nice.
"If we only had a wheelbarrow, that would be something"
Oh - about Meghan. Yeah, that was dumb but I'd chalk it up to youthful naivete.

Jesus Christ, I can't believe I'm defending a McCain. Fuckity fuck fuck. Unfortunately for me I hate rockism almost as much as I hate Republicanism.
Yes, that summertime playlist includes Janis Joplin and INXS but it also included Broken Social Scene, The Cure and Morrissey. Previous playlists included The Postal Service, Art Brut, Sleater-Kinney, The Fratellis, Neutral Milk Hotel and countless other bands that we've deemed "cool" already.
Still, that was a stupid, stupid thing for Meghan McCain to say and I can only hope that this leads to more interviews with members of the McCain family.
Since I can't defend that family for too long (and only as a rock critic, not as an American), did everyone see this column by Eugene Robinson about how McCain, not Obama, is the candidate with The Messiah complex?

@ChrisB -- You have a crush on her, don't you? Just admit it!
@pfft -- This is true love. Do you think this happens every day?
@Estey -- I'm with you.
@The rest of the imaginary world: Imagine for just one moment that someone from Obama or McCain's family said this. Imagine how many times you'd hear it played back on FOX News. Imagine O'Reilly and those other douchebags bringing on war veteran after war veteran to basically say exactly what Chris Estey said above. Then tell me our media has a liberal bias.
