Tonight in Seattle:

Letterman on McCain, McCain NOT on Letterman

Another case of McCain not being able to multi-task. McCain canceled out at the last minute on Letterman saying that he's putting the campaign on hold and was rushing back to Wa(RR)shington to address the crisis and therefore couldn't make the show.

I guess he didn't know that Letterman would find out, mid-show, that McCain hadn't "rushed back to Wa(RR)shington" like he said. Rather, McCain was being interviewed by Katie Couric. Letterman topped this claim off with a live feed from CBS News, showing McCain being interviewed by Couric.

Here's just nine minutes of Letterman's commentary on the situation. There's probably more video of his other snips throughout the rest of the show.

Here's the brilliant top 10 from last night:

Top Ten Questions People Are Asking the John McCain Campaign
10. "I just contributed to your campaign -- how do I get a refund?"
9. "It's Sarah Palin -- does this mean I'm Pars'dent?"
8. "Can't you solve this by selling some of your homes?"
7. "Hi, this is Clay Aiken. Is McCain single?"
6. "Do you still think the fundamentals of our economy are strong, genius?"
5. "Are you doing all this just to get out of going on Letterman?"
4. "What would Matlock do?"
3. "Hillary here -- my schedule is free Friday night"
2. "Is this just an excuse to catch up on napping?"
1. "This is President Bush -- what's all this trouble with the economy?"

And suddenly after a decade or more, Letterman is relevant and hilarious. I especially love "What would Matlock do?"

Also, I love this image, from the Christian Science Monitor:

So when some one cancels out on you with a fake excuse and then you catch them in the lie -- have they been "McCain'd" or did you "McCain" them?

Three brilliant things:

1. Getting Keith Olbermann to replace McCain.
2. Catching McCain in his lie via live TV feed (I think McCain didn't realize Dave's control room can dial in just about any CBS studio feed, even though he's not in the same building).
3. And of course, the Matlock thing.

Leno would never have been so brilliant - but that's the thing about Dave: he reaches for the brilliant, even if he fails to achieve it much of the time.

I just thought Katie Couric was the chairwoman of the Senate Banking Committee. The other option is that McCain is a lying weasel.

Thanks for posting this, I am now going to visit TIG daily to keep up with McCain/Palin's shenanigans.

@1 - uhhhh David Letterman isn't just "suddenly" relevant. He's been providing quality TV - whether or not you've been watching - since he moved to CBS 15 years ago, and the 11 years prior when he was on late night on NBC. And, hope it goes without saying, he has always been better, funnier, more talented than his competitor Jay Leno.

"suddenly after a decade or more, Letterman is relevant and hilarious." Really? If you think that, maybe you're the one with relevance issues. Glad you're catching up now.
