The folks at Fox Pop Recording Co. have started an all-cassette tape label. They are combining their love of pop music and DIY ethics to start up this lil label to hearken back to pre-digital times BC.
Visit their website to find more info on where to send your demos and orders.
Speaking of the next cassette revolution, one of the men who should be credited with making cassettes sexy (he started a label with cassette releases and still believes in the magic of the mix cassette mix tape), is K Records founder Calvin Johnson. Go watch this five part series of video interviews circulating the web of Calvin being interviewed by (Nation of Ulysses') Ian Svenonius.

I am listening to Johnson's mix of "New Wave Underground U.S. 1980-83" right now. Where else can I hear Pylon's "Precaution" flow into Ray Milland's "Distant View" and Jad Fair's "It Walks At Night"? Viva le Mix Tape! Vive le Cassette!

i always had a problem with him selling those mixes, esp knowing some of the folks on his mix tapes never saw a dime from it. i love k records and all, but those comp tapes which were always 5 to 10 bucks at shows just felt a bit like a rip.

i admire the guy, but i guess it's not surprising that he wouldn't pass along any money to the folks on his mix tapes. rumor has it he rarely passes any money on to the artists on his label either.

With just a mention of Calvin Johnson, I absolutely have to plug his solo album, What Was Me. Please, check it out if you like soulfully and woefully naked music.

Honestly, I can't imagine where Seattle music would be without this guy. A true pioneer. If I happened to be put on a K mix-tape, I would be happy even without any money. Though, I would probably force him to take me out to dinner.
