The weekend in music... tell us all about it

How was your Memorial Day weekend? We heard there was a little music thing going on over on the other side of the Cascades... did anyone make it over to check it out?

Seriously though, Sasquatch 2008 had an undeniably amazing lineup this year and we're sure it was amazing. So tell us all about it. Did you have fun? See anyone amazing? Any huge surprises or disappointments?

Our only one was that the organizers were so stingy on the press passes, and I know TIG wasn't the only local music site who experienced that...

But nevermind about that. If you have words/photos/links/hilarious tales of Honey Buckets and campsites you'd like to share, we'd love to hear all about it.

I dunno about Sasquatch but I saw M83 yesterday and holy crap....it was horrible...what a crappy performance. Maybe it's just because I know a little too much about synthesizers but that man uses too many digital pads! gah! it was like a horrible hour long dense pad that never ended....
and the man promotes himself as an analog synth user?....yeah right, that bright blue led, translucent modular synthesizer sat there like a beautiful trophy wife that you just impress your friends with....he only twisted one knob on that thing the entire show....can you guess which knob?...yes, the cutoff frequency, wow how creative.
Want to know what did impress me though....berg sans nipple...now there is a band with more than a hint of ingenuity, they could show m83 a thing or two about maximizing performance and unique sounds.

I saw the always fantastic Poison Control Center in their first appearance in Seattle. They played in a basement in the u-district. It was insane. There's some photos in the TIG flickr pool.

BOAT at KTUB, which you all should have come to see! They were incredible as always, as were Young Sportsmen. What nice guys, the lot of them.

I went to see Ladytron at the Showbox. They were pretty good, but not as good as the last time they were in town, in 2006. My full review's here on my MySpace blog.

Yah know, being in a sour mood with the peeps from Sasquatch, I'm delighted to hear of all these exciting show-going experiences that happened in Seattle proper this weekend.

Tho bummer about the M83 show, @bob.

Kiku is right- BOAT was pretty darn amazing, playing on the floor in front of everyone instead of on stage. A lot of bands like doing that, but based on their style of casual music, it fits them perfect.

Sasquatch would have been awesome if I was rich and if they weren't so greedy. But sigh... some other time I suppose.

I was at Sasquatch and I'd never been to a Flaming Lips show before. Let me just say that it overshadowed the whole weekend, no matter how fantastic the rest of the lineup was. Being stuffed into that crowd 10 feet from the stage with clouds of confetti raining down on me was probably the best time I've ever had in my entire life. They sure are crowd pleasers. I especially loved it when the nude women got up on stage during their cover of The Song Remains the Same. Other memorable moments include the sing along version of Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots, the chanting and singing along during The Yeah Yeah Yeah song and the peace signs during I don't remember when. Not to mention I got to meet Wayne Coyne earlier in the day and have him sign my ticket to Christmas on Mars (which I wasn't able to see due to the ridiculous hard curfew instated by the amphitheatre, supposedly to be considerate of their "neighbors"). Very very very very very fun show, though.

Thank you so much for the kind words, Kiku. It was an absolute pleasure playing the show on Friday. We had a BOATload of fun (I'm sorry...that's really really stupid. But BOAT were just amazing, as always). Anyway, a wonderful night...
Hope this finds you well...
Cheers!

Sasquatch was amazing. I was suprised by how much I enjoyed Tegan and Sara. Holy crap they rock! Hard! Modest Mouse played all their best songs. Michael Stipe complained about the stage being wet in between every single fucking song. Whiny little bitch. M.I.A. had some decent beats if you wanted to shake your booty but I give the credit to the DJ. Her personal performance was kinda weak. Her voice and her dancers kinda sucked. "Awesome" lived up to their name. Death Cab performed well, but it sounded too much like the albums and was kinda a let down after Tegan & Sara brought the energy up so high. Stephen Malkmus & The Jicks sucked. They didn't play a single song off of Pig Lib, their best album, and most of the new material just sounds like Mr. Malkmus jerking off. The Cure were amazing playing a stripped down set of all their best tracks, both the hits and the deep cuts, and tied with Tegan & Sara as the 2 best shows of the weekend.

Wesley you are such a sweetheart! But you guys left without your money, I'm sorry! I tried very hard to find you, but everyone said you had left.

I'm glad you had a good time, we all did too! Thanks for the incredible show!!

I ended up having way more fun at Sasquatch than I expected to. From Beirut on Saturday, through the National's nightfall set, to the tremendous Flaming Lips UFO show I was continually happily surprised. Although I'd seen the Flaming Lips before, having the extremely good fortune to be among the sweaty pack of dancing teletubbies and seeing the whole show from the stage was utterly life-affirming. I feel like I'm going to spend the next few months trying to figure out how to do it again.

Was only able to go to Sasquatch for Saturday, but boy was it a blast. Love love love the New Pornographers and they were in fine form, including both Neko Case and Dan Bejar in attendance. Don't know how Bejar did it since his other band was playing at more or the less the same time at one of the other stages. Played a lot of their hits old and new.

I'm a huge Modest Mouse fan but unfortunately I thought their set was a little weak. Brock's voice was strained for much of the second half of the set, particularly on Doin' The Cockroach. And why why why do they always play We've Got Everything in their live shows? I love the song but there is no one in the band who can sing like James Mercer and therefore the live version always sounds pathetic compared to the album version. Still love the Mouse though and hearing what Johnny Marr adds to the songs off Lonesome Crowded West is fun. After the Mouse, skipped REM (who I saw at SXSW just a couple months ago), and caught the second half of the Breeders set. Got there just as they were starting to play Cannonball; what a great song.

Earlier in the day, Throw Me The Statue put on a fine set including all my favorite songs of theirs to a decent size crowd which kept getting bigger, on the Yeti stage. Fleet Foxes were excellent, playing two sets on the Main stage when the National wound up late for the party.

The one act I wasn't going to miss, though, having not managed to see them despite several opportunities over the last year, was Okkervil River. And boy am I glad I got my ass over the Wookie stage early. Managed to get right up next to the stage, in front of a large enthusiastic crowd. Will Sheff was just pouring his heart into every song and you could just tell that he and the band were absolutely thrilled to be there. Started with The President's Dead, which is pretty daring considering that the first 2/3 of the song is almost a capella, but he owned the crowd right from the start. Second song was Black, an emotionally devastating number and my favorite from Black Sheep Boy. Then a whole lot of tracks from The Stage Names, all excellent. Finished with a cover of Sloop John B, the old Beach Boys chestnut, except with altered lyrics, faster, and just rocking out to the max it sounded incredible.

And let's not forget the gorgeous view of the gorge and awesome people watching. Yeah, Sasquatch is great.
