The best album cover ever?

You be the judge...

Joy Division
The Music Nation blog reports on the top 10 winners of UK mag Music Magpie's reader's poll for the top album covers ever. The #1 winner, shown above? Joy Division's 1979 LP Unknown Pleasures.

The full list, in order...

  1. Joy Division Unknown Pleasures
  2. The Stone Roses The Stone Roses
  3. The Beatles Sergeant Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band
  4. The Smiths Meat is Murder
  5. Led Zeppelin Houses of the Holy
  6. The Beatles Abbey Road
  7. Pink Floyd Dark Side of the Moon
  8. David Bowie The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust
  9. Paul Weller Stanley Road
  10. Sex Pistols Nevermind the Bollocks

See all the album covers over at Music Nation.

Think they made good picks? Who would you rather see on there? I'm a bit unsure what criteria were used in determining "best" -- many of these seem more like "most iconic." But maybe that's just me.

i don't know about this list, it seems like the 10 album covers most likely to appear on the cover of mojo magazine in order to sell more copies.

some of my personal favorite covers:
herb alpert's tijuana brass 'whipped cream and other delights'
funkstorung 'appetite for disctruction'
isaac hayes 'black moses'
massive attack 'blue lines'
throbbing gristle '20 jazz funk greats'

The cover at that makes my heart beat outta control is the Wedding Present's Hit Parade vinyl series (they released one 7" a month for a whole year). You can go here to read about where they pulled each image from on this website.:

I've professed by love of this album cover before, so it is no surprise that I agree with Joy Division at #1.

No Stones albums?

My favorite album cover is "The Pod" by Ween.

I do love that "Unknown Pleasures" cover. I used to have a poster of it on my wall when I lived in London. And I had a t-shirt with the graphic on it as well.

It's still mesmerizing.

And for those science nerds out there (hi!), the cover of Unknown Pleasures is a compilation of pulses from the first pulsar identified. Go astronomy!

And to think that all this time I thought it was (just) a cool graphic of a mountain range . . .

Man, the fact that "London Calling" isn't on this list is sad. Maybe it's just me, but that's a much more iconic image than the Pistols' stuff.

And, although I can't really say they're deserving of this list, I was always a huuuge fan of PWEI's Designers Republic produced art/image.

i'm such a fan of the designer's republic, i almost have to exclude their covers because it would just be a list of tdr works. the compilation 'lily of the valley' on schematic records is an amazing piece of art.

I'm just happy to see a UK "best" list related to music that doesn't include Oasis.

As far as Bowie goes, I would take Earthling over Ziggy Stardust, but...
