SXSW 2008 Day 3: Open Thread

{Are you at SXSW right now? Or are you like me, sadly not rocking out in Austin but eager for updates from the field? Either way, TIG is going to post an "open thread" for each day of SXSW, where show-going fans can post comments, and the rest of us can send suggestions/pleas for updates to those lucky peeps (ahem, LIZ!!) who are hooting it up Texas stylee this week. So please -- chime on in the comments section below!}

A ton of Seattle bands are playing on day three of the festival, including:

  • 8p Coconut Coolouts, Fado Patio
  • 8p Helms Alee, Red 7
  • 9p The Fall Outs, Fado Patio
  • 9p Sera Cahoone, Bourbon Rocks
  • 9:30 Grayskul, Volume
  • 10p Grand Archives, Bourbon Rocks
  • 10p Unnatural Helpers, Fado Patio
  • 11p Say Hi, Red Eyed Fly
  • 11:30 Reggie Watts, Esther's Follies
  • 12a Fleet Foxes, Bourbon Rocks
  • 12:30 Reggie Watts, The Velveeta Room
  • 1a Supersuckers, Emo's Annex

I gotta admit, if I were there, tonight might be the night that I go for familiar faces over discovering new bands, and I would follow our hometown bands around Austin. Who would you go see??

Helms Alee is playing South by? That's excellent news!

I'd absolutely go see She & Him (Zooey Deschanel & M Ward). Swoon dreamy swoon!

And I'd defintely go see Fleet Foxes. In fact, I learned this week that wonderful worlds are colliding. A recent perusal of the Fleet Foxes’ MySpace page shows that Christian Wargo--frontman and founder of one of my fave local outfits of all time, Crystal Skulls--has joined the Foxes’ lineup! Wargo’s got a penchant for lilting lyrics and gorgeous melodies—a perfect fit for the FF sound. Now I’m even more giddy for their April show here in town!

I want to be in Austin SO BADLY right now!

KEXP is broadcasting live from SXSW, and they've got the Breeders on right now. Who, according to DJ Cheryl Waters (and which I just verified online), have been around since *1988*!

ZOW! How did I not realize it's been 20 years? I won't say how old that makes me feel.

They can still rock it.

I stopped in the Bourbon to catch the Fleet Foxes set. Never actually listened to any of their music before but they get talked up a lot around Seattle and I happened to be walking by, so whynot? Half the fun of sxsw is hearing something new as you're walking down 6th, and stopping in for a listen. Any way, they were pretty good. Pecknold seemed kind of irritable before the set, maybe because the stage lights were too bright and they wouldn't lower them for some reason. He mellowed as the set progressed and the crowd was enthusiastic.

Generally though, I prefer my indie 'roots' to be a little more energetic. Last night we saw Ha Ha Tonka, a sweet 4 piece from Missouri. Rootsy rock with great hooks. Kinda White Stripes-ish.

Didn't Deal form the Breeders just as she and Black were having their first round of arguments about the musical direction of the Pixies? He wasn't letting them record hardly any of her songs. Of course, history has shown that his compositions were uniformly more interesting than hers, musically and lyrically, so I'd have to agree with his call on that one.
