Tonight in Seattle:

SXSW 2008 Day 1: Open Thread

{Are you at SXSW right now? Or are you like me, sadly not rocking out in Austin but eager for updates from the field? Either way, TIG is going to post an "open thread" for each day of SXSW, where show-going fans can post comments, and the rest of us can send suggestions/pleas for updates to those lucky peeps (ahem, LIZ!!) who are hooting it up Texas stylee this week. So please -- chime on in the comments section below!}

If I were at SXSW right now, this would be my imaginary schedule for day one, Wednesday, March 12, 2008:

{And yes, I know I've sometimes scheduled myself in more than one place at a time. It is, after all, an imaginary schedule...}

  • 8p The Upsidedown, Cedar Door
  • 9p Longwave, Emos
  • 10p Hopewell, Bourbon Rocks
  • 10p Peter Moren, The Parish
  • 11p Sons and Daughters, Antone's
  • 11p Daniel Lanois, Pangaea
  • 11p Okkervil River feat. Roky Erickson, Austin Music Hall
  • 12a The Kills, Antones
  • 12a The Ting Tings, Buffalo Bills
  • 1a The Blow, Emos IV

Some Seattle bands playing Day 1 at SXSW include...

  • 8p Kate Tucker and the Sons of Sweden, Wave
  • 8:30 Choklate, Molotov Lounge
  • 11p The Femurs, Maggie Maes
  • 1a Trespassers William, The Hideout

Sigh. I can almost taste the free Jack Daniels...

I would LOVE to see the Femurs at SXSW! I would love to be at SXSW :(.

Good morning Austin! Here's my rough estimate of what today might (should?) hold...

12p - These United States (outside Emos)

1p - White Denim (Peacock)
(ok, things are about to get dicey for the next hour -- I'll see what I can do...)

1.15p - A Place To Bury Strangers (Mohawk)

1.30p - These New Puritans (outside Emos)

2.15p - YACHT (outside Emos)

3.50p - Jason Collett (Emos annex)

4p - Holy Fuck (Peacock)

4.30p - Fishboy (Lovejoys)

5p - Wedding Present (Emos annex)

5.30p - Hey Willpower (Emos inside)

(meet up with friends for dinner, wander, discover, splash face with cold water to refresh thyself for the evening festivities)

9.30p - The Judys (Austin Music Hall) (super excited about this)

11p - Okkervil River with Roky Erickson (Austin Music Hall)

12a - Does It Offend You, Yeah? (Parish)
(or/and) Ting Tings (Buffalo Billards)
(or/and) REM (Stubbs - total longshot, not sure if it's worth even using up precious time for this one)

1a - The Carrots (Blind Pig Rooftop)
(or/and) White Williams (Antones)
(or/and) Dan Deacon (Emos JR)

OK, off to start the day with Ye Olde Continental Breakfast. It's a good sign that I'm out of control craving hot sauce at 8a, right? Let the SXSW begin!

Hot sauce is the sustenance of my life. Do not be ashamed of the sauce, it will treat you well.

Oh, *sigh*! I'm living vicariously through you, Liz!

YAY! I just got a call from the Wedding Present -- I'm going to do a wee interview with them today at 3p... What should I ask?

BTW - this keyboard I am typing on from the Convention Center is kinda wonko... so apologies for typos.

Whoa, those day parties are amazing!! So jealous...

THE JUDYS!!!??!!!

and say hello to Fishboy for me!

Also, remember that if you have time this afternoon please stop by "NX35:Music from Denton TX"

Liz you are going to have an AMAZING day! I can't wait to hear all about it!

Two words. Gil Manteras Party Dream

I know, I know, I wish I was in Austin right now too! Could there be a few more amazing artists at SXSW? No.

But for real: AUSTIN VS. SEATTLE: South By Southwest or Pacific Northwest? Which city is best? Check out my blog and tell me what you think:

Dude, the Drag beats the Ave any day. I love Seattle, thats why I live here, but there is something about being down south that just doesn't resonate for me in Seattle. I can't explain it, and you won't understand it - unless of course you come from TX.
