Super duper Spanish tropicalia band crush
Submitted by Imaginary Shrie on March 7, 2008.I just got engaged (Yay Me!), and while I'm starry eyed over that, what is really making me swoon is Spanish artist El Guincho, otherwise known as Pablo Díaz-Reixa. His mix of Spanish Tropicalia, Afro-Beat, interlocking percussion rhythms, organic tribal chanting, silvery guitar flourishes and exquisite pop ambient song structures make me weak in the knees.
There are notes of Person Pitch or Strawberry Jam in this record, but only in the sub-surface. It pleases on so many levels. Washes of gleeful multi-instrumental choruses and overtly simple, yet intricate layers of vocals are the topper to looped and sampled snippets. It's pure pleasure in a cookie jar of sound.

Thank you (blushing)... I'm super excited! About the engagement, and this band. Ha.

I'm reminded of Konono No.1. I was almost turned off by any comparison to Animal Collective (ugh), but the video makes me think otherwise.

It is very reminiscent of Konono No. 1, but a bit more ambient/trance based I think. I used to hate Animal Collective. Then I got into Panda Bear and the damage had been done. I understand your "(ugh)" though.
