The Zombies play Seattle(!)...at El Corazon(?)
Submitted by Jon Harthun on June 6, 2008.The Zombies, best known for their influential 1968 classic, Odyssey & Oracle, have promised a tour and retrospective release in celebration of the album's 40th birthday.
Thoughts of a tour began when four of the five members (Rod Argent, Colin Blunstone, Chris White and Hugh Grundy) banded together for a three-night concert series in London this past March.
So where does this tour stop? The Paramount right? Maybe the Moore? Perhaps the Triple Door? No. The legendary Zombies are playing El Corazon.
Packing into that hole in the wall is either going to feel like a genuine 40-year flashback or a sad reminder of how a 20-something like yours truly is only fooling themselves into thinking that they weren't born into the wrong decade.
Don't get me wrong, seeing the Zombies at that small venue will be legendary, but doesn't a band of such stature deserve something a little better? The place books high school acts, screamo, and AC/DC cover bands (I'm looking at you Hell's Belles) about every other night.
Maybe it's time to get over my snobby venue self and take up what seems like one heck of a concert opportunity. I can only imagine the ticket prices...
Here's some Northwest dates
07/23/08 Portland, OR Wonder Ballroom
07/24/08 Seattle, WA El Corazon
07/25/08 Langley, BC (Vancouver) Cascades Casino

This will be the second time in about two years that the Zombies will have played El Corazon (although they were at the Triple Door the last time they were in Seattle).
El Corazon does host a lot of punk/hardcore bands and younger bands but they've also booked the NY Dolls among other bands of that stature. The club also was kind enough to host TIG's Christmas party last year the week the Crocodile closed.

Yea - I will always have a soft spot in my heart for El Corazon. Those rockers rule.

Yes, I have a very fond place in my imaginary heart for El Corazon, especially since they came to our rescue for last year's Christmas party when the Croc unexpectedly closed (RIP).
I also have muy fondness for the Zombies.
So I second Imaginary Shrie's pronouncement of "badass" all around for this event.

OMG Liz -- sometimes it's like we share a brain. Did we just post at the *exact* same time?

El Corazon...or The Graceland as I still fondly refer to it as...was my first venue for shows back in the day. And by back in the day...I mean 8 years ago.
What was my first show there? Kind of embarrassing...
It was Dashboard Confessional's first ever Seattle show.
Buuuut, Rocky Votolato opened (his brother came on sometime during the set to play with him) and the Weakerthans closed it. So actually, not a bad show.

While I agree it is an interesting choice of venue for the band to choose, I am not as sure we should be talking shit about local venues. With the tenseness caused by venue closures and the city heckling others, I think we should give anywhere still providing a place to play some positivity.
Unless of course we're talking about Studio Seven, bleh. ;)

I think there's a time, a place, and a niche for El Corazon, and my personal opinion is the Zombies don't fit that. My aim wasn't to talk shit. In all fairness, compared to other Seattle venues, it is a dive. But a dive with a lot of history and it deserves no less recognition than The Triple Door's glitz and glamor.
While we're on the topic of venues, has anyone been to the Showbox SoDo? I've heard mixed things. I was going to go to the Myspace Justice/Diplo tour show there, but I realized I had no money and that'd I'd probably be arrested for dancing with anyone there.

Yay for dives! They're the best place to see a show. FO SHO.
