Tonight in Seattle:

A little message from the Crocodile Cafe

This seems fitting on a day when Chop Suey -- the heir apparent to the local indie rock live show crown since the closure of the Croc six months ago* -- announced that they've been purchased by K's Dream, a nightclub based in Chiba City, Japan: a cryptic message from the Crocodile Cafe website.

In case the message comes down in the coming days, here it is:

Elitism:

1. The belief that certain persons or members of certain classes or groups deserve favored treatment by virtue of their perceived superiority, as in intellect, social status, or financial resources.
2. a. The sense of entitlement enjoyed by such a group or class. b. Control, rule, or domination by such a group or class.

This simple vocabulary definition has taken the place of any other content on the Croc's website.

Is owner Stephanie Dorgan trying to tell us something? Or is someone trying to tell us something about her?

* Can you believe it's been six months since the Croc closed?

Wow that is cryptic! I feel like there's some amazing mystery going down in Seattle. Someone call Scooby-Doo!

Sounds like the case of the IT Guy Gone Wild.

Looks like that msg has been up since at least June 19th, according to Google's last cache. Nice find.

@Sam -- we don't have time to keep up on all the active websites we'd like, let alone check those for defunct clubs. I consider four days fair game. ;)

At least it was covered. So shoot me...

I'm not sure if Sam M was being condescending about covering it. I don't think. Wasn't June 19th just an hour ago anyway?

Regardless, it *is* a very interesting development. And it's nice to know that someone has keys to the Croc website vault and cares enough to update it and give us a nugget of hope the place will rise again.

I am the walrus?

Regardless of the content of that message/statement...the truth is that it is very unfortunate that we (Seattle music lovers) lost a venue such as the Croc.

This little city of ours is in such a state of odd flux. To have one of its best establishments close the way it did...well hurts.

The scars obviously still tingle a little with that note.

Yea, the Croc's closing was kind of a shock, and a blow to the scene here. Let's just hope something good comes of it.

Does anyone know the latest on the sale of The Croc (aside from the Depp rumor)? I would like to gauge interest in putting together a nonprofit to takeover The Croc and run it as a community owned venue (sort of like The Vera Club for a mostly over-21 crowd). We will need pro bono, upfront legal assistance to set up the foundation and some guidance on funding, but I think this would be an exciting and viable way to Save the Croc. Thoughts?

Do it! I haven't heard anymore on it but the Croc must live on!

Okay, let's start with the basics. (1) We need to know how to contact the Crocodile owners to find out status (sale pending? sold? still for sale?). (2) We need some professional advise on community ownership and nonprofit corporations (legal and accounting), including how to seek and secure funding. Anyone with tips on this, please post it on this site for now. Once we have an answer to (1) above, we will create a blog site to exchange ideas and coordinate activities. As I said, I envision this being a bit like The Vera Project but skewed to an older crowd. Anyone involved with Vera who can provide information and assistance will be greatly welcomed and appreciated.

Unfortunately, I have not obtained any information, tips, pro bono service offers, etc. to advance this cause. I think this could have worked, but there does not appear to be support for this effort. Nonetheless, thanks for the forum and the chance to float this idea.

And now, there is a new presence at the Crocodile website: it appears to be the Crocodile's website circa 2001, with some links dead and others working.

Hmm... very interesting...

Intriguing indeed....
