69 Love Songs, Exile in Guyville, and {insert your favorite here}

While TIG doesn't host tribute nights very often, when we do -- they're a doozy. We have in fact thrown two, in our six years of existence: our 2006 69 Love Songs pre-Valentine's Day bash, and last week's smashing Exile in Guyville party at Chop Suey.

Both shows were incredible, approaching transcendent, for me. Hearing some of my all-time favorite records performed by some of my favorite local bands, surrounding by hundreds of people all experiencing the same sense of excitement, is a very amazing sort of high. And like any good buzz, now that I've had some, I want MORE.

I have had a few thoughts about what records are amazing enough to be covered in their entirety: the first Stone Roses record. Radiohead OK Computer. The Smiths The Queen is Dead. The Breeders Last Splash. Nick Cave Let Love In. Or the obvious: The Cure Three Imaginary Boys. But I'm not really sure I've nailed one, really.

To that end, my simple question to you, our imaginary readers, is this: If you could pick the next album for our next TIG party, which record would it be, and why?

Matthew Sweet's Girlfriend would be brilliant.

afghan whigs - black love
mercury rev - deserters songs
chicago - II (guilty pleasure)
yo la tengo - and then nothing turned itself inside out.

Pixies - Surfer Rosa
PJ Harvey - Stories from the City, Stories From The Sea
Belle & Sebastian - Boy With The Arab Strap

I would be against OK Computer just because that's one that Stereogum did, albeit in mp3 form. My choices would be Dig Me Out by Sleater-Kinney, Is This It by the Strokes and maybe Odelay by Beck.

You know what I would really like to see, though? Is at the end of 2008 have a show with like 3 bands whose record made the top 10 of TIG's EOY poll play their records in their entirety.

@ChrisB I love that idea.

I think we should make that happen for sure.

Also, I second the votes for Girlfriend and Stories from the City, Stories From The Sea as tribute-worthy.

Trust by Elvis Costello
Yankee, Hotel, Foxtrot by Wilco
Pretenders 2

... still on the shortlist of albums I can listen to from back to front after all these years.
A film soundtrack night wouldn't be a bad idea either... but that goes without saying
(;-D)

I like the idea. I would recommend:

Nick Drake: Pink Moon
Interpol: Turn On the Bright Lights
Wolf Parade: Apologies to the Queen Mary

Rain Dogs by Tom Waits

Easy-Star All-Stars also did an Ok Computer tribute called Radiodread. Check it out because it really is fantastic (unlike the stereogum trib. IMO)!

The Supersonic Storybook by Urge Overkill

And for the ladies: Wish You Were Here by Pink Floyd

"Dragnet" by The Fall. I *know* Seattle has players who could pummel the crowd with those Steve Hanley basslines & Scanlon guitar scrabblings. & everyone wants to be Mark E Smith for a night.

Any Cure record.

A few;

Fleetwood Mac - Rumours (duh!)
Steely Dan - Can't Buy a Thrill (I might be alone here)
Throwing Muses - Throwing Muses
David Bowie - Hunky Dory

I could go on.

@ChrisB. Brilliant idea.

Given that 69LS and EIGV were both classics of the indie genre, and also leant themselves easily to covers and reinterpretation, I think Belle and Sebastian is a great choice, which someone mentioned above. But if you're going Belle and Sebastian route, TIgermilk or Sinister I think is a better choice than Arab Strap.

But really, I think the best would be The Microphones _The Glow, pt 2_.

Perfect From Now On by Built to Spill.

Either Paul's Boutique or Every Good Boy Deserves Fudge would be my choice.

a nick drake tribute night, sometime next year, to mark the 40th anniversary of his first record. or why not do "bleach" next june, to mark the 20th anniversary of that...

a night of randy newman covers would be pretty spectacular as well...

Oooh! I will third the suggestion for Matthew Sweet's Girlfriend record! And Thriller! YES!

Others record cover nights I would definitely nerd out over:
The Knack - Get the Knack
Elvis Costello - My Aim is True
The Modern Lovers - (the first self-titled one)

A fourth vote for Matthew Sweet and seconding for The Modern Lovers and Rumours.

I would also throw my vote in for the s/t Modern Lovers record and any of the first 3 Elvis Costello records.

However, I'm totally throwing in a vote for repeating the 69LS cover night, because it happened before I was 21 and it broke my heart.

ABC's The Lexicon of Love. XTC's Skylarking. The Cure's Disintegration. All pivotal to my conversion to good music (and homosexuality).
