Our crazy theory for who is headlining SP20 tonight
Submitted by imaginary dana on July 13, 2008.
Liz and I aren't at SP20 so we have time speculate and we've got a good working theory that there's a magical secret headliner tonight and it's going to be the Postal Service.
The facts:
- Wolf Parade ends at 9p so there's no band scheduled in the 9-10p timeslot. Wolf Parade, while grand, are probably not the epic ending the a 20-year anniversary festival deserves.
- Death Cab has no date on their website for tonight.
- Postal Service's Give Up was Sub Pop's best selling album since Nirvana's Bleach.
- Jimmy Tamberello's relative (brother?) is at the festival, photographing and goods.
- Ben Gibbard is likely playing this show in order to get out of any contractual obligation to record a second Postal Service record (wlld-ass speculation).
That's our theory and we're sticking to it.
What's your theory?

Y’all know that DC’s in Europe, right?
07/12/08-Hamburg, GER
07/15/08-Birmingham, UK
It’s physically possible for Gibbard to make it here, do the show, and get back to the tour, but there would be no time to brush up the songs unless Tamborello flew to Hamburg to meet him and then they practiced on the plane.

Yeah, with DCFC being in Europe the chance of The Postal Service being secret headliners is about the same as it being Nirvana.
Is there even going to be a secret headliner? I hadn't heard anything implying it and with Day One selling out in advance, you'd think there would be some whispering going on to drum up interest for Day Two.
I think that Wolf Parade is the headliner and it is ending early just because it's Sunday night and most of the people there have to go back to work Monday morning. But, what do I know? I'm not even there!

Totally agree that it might be somewhat implausible with Death Cab in Europe. But, Fleet Foxes flew in from the E. Coast leg of their tour just for this show.
I'm just sayin'.

Dave Grohl was just here earlier this week with The Foo Fighters, so it could still be Nirvana, too. ;-)
That's the rumor I'm going to start spreading!

So far a lot of the other press people seem pretty convinced that there is no headliner and that Marymoor is sending us home early so we can all go to work in the morning - it IS the east side, after all (that's the general sentiment, not mine!)
I don't know, I'm loathe to stick around and find out there's no secret headliner and then have to try to get out of the park with 4500 other people, but I'd hate to have left and then found out that someone phenomenal showed up...

And the special secret headliner was..... NO ONE!
The show ended early. No headliner. No all-star encore performance of "We Are the World" featuring members of all the Sub Pop bands past and present. Nada.
That was anti-climatic.
ChrisB -- I think I owe you a nickel or something for your astute guesswork.
Sigh.
Ahh well -- lots of great reviews still rolling in. I especially liked imaginary stella's review of Green River. So good!

what a relief. you had me panicking that i'd missed something by leaving a few minutes into wolf parade's encore to beat the traffic.

I saw two fourths of The Shins yesterday. At that point, I was convinced they were gonna be playing.
Towards the end of the night, Marty walked by, and I thanked him for all the great tunes and asked if they would be playing. He graciously thanked me shook my hand, and also shook his head no, waved and the festival was over.
Too bad something "special" couldn't have been thrown together.
Wait, what am I saying? The weekend was awesome.

That is EXACTLY who I think - and hope, hope, hope!
That, or Sunny Day Real Estate. Yesterday during Seaweed's set, Aaron Stauffer dedicated a song to Sunny Day. "They're not here today because they're off playing in a warehouse. It's true," he said. Why would a band that's been disbanded for the better part of a decade be playing in a warehouse, coincidentally the first day of a festival by their label? Rehearsal, perhaps?
Either way, I'd be pysched. Moreso for Postal Service of course -- c'mon, that would make my brain explode. But I heart me some Sunny Day.
We'll post any updates we hear while at Marymoor today!
