While we were extolling the praises of the Green River show at SP20 tonight, we (imaginary stella and I) debated over whether the band could actually be called a "supergroup" as that name is normally reserved for bands made up of stars of other great bands.
We decided that a more appropriate term for Green River is "reverse supergroup" as it was a minor band that spawned several other major bands.
Put that in your rock lexicon and smoke it.
PS - Can we think of any other reverse supergroups? Or is there already a term for this that we just don't know?

I don't know if counts because Buffalo Springfield are pretty legendary themselves (Rock and Roll Hall of Fame) but Stephen Stills, Jim Messina and Neil Young all had pretty great post-Springfield careers. (I almost wrote "post-BS" - and I guess I just did).

Mother Love Bone. They were signed and on the verge, then ... and Pearl jam never woulda happened. I remember how I was pissed they got signed before Soundgarden, but I didnt appreciate Andrew Woods before it was too late.

similar to #2, uncle tupelo and at the drive in were already kinda big before splitting.
would the rule be that the individuals went on to become BIGGER in their new incarnations?

The Byrds produced David Crosby (CSN/CSNY) and Chris Hillman (the Flying Burrito Brothers)...
I dunno. I'm sure some better ones will come to mind as I fall asleep tonight. ha.
